Security and Compliance in the Cloud

Terry Woloszyn, Founder of PerspecSys, emphasized security and compliance in his session at the 4th International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo, held at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Nov. 2 – 4. In his session – “Addressing Data Privacy, Residency, and Security when Adopting Cloud Applications” - focused on new technologies and techniques that allow sensitive data to appear to be in the cloud, but really remain behind the enterprise firewall. Woloszyn emphasized that “there should be a segregation of the data and the functionality. All the business sensitive date should be behind the firewall.”

Cisco Reports First Quarter Earnings

Commenting on the quarter, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Chambers noted, "Building off what we saw as a clear tipping point in Q4, our Q1 results continued to reflect strong sequential growth trends that meet or exceed expectations during normal economic times. We view the improving economic outlook, combined with solid execution on our growth strategy, as creating unparalleled opportunity to drive more value into the core of the network. Simply said, we believe that key market transitions across collaboration, virtualization and video will drive productivity and growth in network loads for the next decade, and are evolving even faster than expected."

Trusting the Cloud

Trust is an important word in the world of security, and in cloud computing it’s an even bigger deal. Cloud computing offers up the promise that an organizations will be able to run any application from anywhere at any time. But in a multi-tenant environment, a cloud application running in a virtual machine might be located on any number of hosts in a virtualized datacenter, and running next to others’ virtual machines on those hosts.

Cisco, EMC, VMware in Cloud Venture

Sometime before 4:30 Wednesday afternoon New York time Cisco and EMC, two companies that are already tight and were expected to get tighter, are supposed to announce a joint venture to sell a cloud or cloud products called vBlock. VMware's involved because virtualization is relatively standard cloud fare, it's majority owned by EMC and it's already Cisco's BFF but its level of participation in the venture is unclear despite all the whispering going on. It could be a full member. Based on broad hints from the companies, the Wall Street Journal got wind of the joint venture in September and said it was code named Alpine.

CloudBerry Backup - Purging Options Explained

Note: this post applies to CloudBerry Backup 1.3 and later. CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows backup and restore that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 cloud storage. In this post we will try to explain you how to configure purging options and why you need them. CloudBerry Backup creates a version of the file on backup storage each time the file is modified. Using purging options you basically configure how many versions to keep. This helps you keep the number of versions to the necessary minimum and cut down on storage requirements.

I'll be reporting on www.cloudcomputingexpo.com next week, even though I'm 7,500 miles away from its Santa Clara location. It starts Monday morning, and features keynotes from Yahoo, Oracle, and Unisys.

I'll be watching it live on www.sys-con.tv, between the hours of 1am and 9am local time here in Asia. No problem, I got up in the middle of the night to watch the US get beat in World Cup soccer back in 2002, I can certainly be up for this.

A recent Cloud Computing conference run by the same folks featured a discussion of the Cloud Computing Manifesto and the defense of it by IBM's Kristof Kloeckner. We'll see what sort of sparks will fly this time.

Introducing CloudBerry Explorer for Azure Blob Storage

Recently we announced the beta release of CloudBerry Explorer for Nirvanix. In our attempt to increase the breadth of cloud storage support and we are proud to announce CloudBerry Explorer for Microsoft Azure Blob Storage as our third product in the series

What is Microsoft Azure?

Microsoft Azure is a cloud operating system where developers can host their applications to benefit from cloud platform. When you host application in the cloud you get virtually unlimited scalability and pay as you use model that hard to underestimate. Every cloud platform would be incomplete without storage support and Microsoft’s platform is not an exception. Azure comes with 3 types of storage: Table Storage, Queue Storage and Blob Storage.

What is Microsoft Azure Blob Storage

Among other storage types Azure Blob Storage is the one that can be compared with Amazon S3 and as its name suggests designed to store binary data. Obviously you can store the files of different types in the storage like this.

How CloudBerry Explorer supports Azure Blob Storage

First, you register account same way. We will have a separate post on how to obtain the account.

<shape style="width: 311.25pt; height: 408pt; visibility: visible; mso-wrap-style: square" id="Picture_x0020_1" type="#_x0000_t75" spid="_x0000_i1026"><imagedata title="o:title" src="file:///C:\DOCUME~1\akviatko\LOCALS~1\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image002.png"></imagedata></shape>

Once you register your account you can do usual file operations such create containers, folders, copy/move files between Azure Blob storage and your local computers.
LA to Go with Google Apps on Condition . . .

The city of Los Angeles has okayed a $7.2 million deal with CSC to rip out a lot of its existing Novell GroupWise e-mail systems and whatnot and replace it with Google Apps provided CSC agrees to pay a pre-set penalty if there’s a security breach. They still need to dicker about that according to the AP.

Canonical’s Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition, code named Karmic Koala, became generally available for free download Thursday. That’s the stuff that introduces Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC), a k a Eucalyptus Software’s open source software, as a fully supported technology. The widgetry is based on the same APIs as Amazon EC2 and, as previously reported, lets businesses build private clouds.

Key Considerations for Cloud Networking

Clouds are not different from the enterprise in this respect; they have unique networking infrastructures that support complex and flexible multi-tenant environments. Remember that the cloud providers have to control their networking so that they can route traffic within their infrastructure. More important, their design is completely different from your enterprise networking architecture, design, and addressing. This is not a problem if you’re doing something stand-alone in the cloud because you don’t care what the network structure is as long as you can access it over the internet. However, if you want to extend your existing networks and use your existing applications, there are serious discontinuities that have to be addressed.

Migrating an Enterprise Application to the Cloud: A Case Study

Migrating enterprise applications to the Cloud raises multiple questions: user experience, data security and compliance, cost of migration, and a framework to assess return on investment. In his session at Cloud Computing Conference & Expo, Anil Parambath, VP, Operations at CSS Corp., will highlight a step-wise evaluation framework for migrating an enterprise payroll application to Amazon's EC2 / S3 / EBS infrastructure.

Too often organizations have deployed virtual infrastructure tactically to reduce server sprawl or speed application deployments. Without a higher level view of organizational priorities, bad habits persist; unused snapshots and zombie VMs become more the rule than the exception causing budgets to continue their upward spiral.

Cloud Analytics Checklist

What are enterprise users looking for from a cloud analytics solution? Realtime + Historical Data. In addition to analyzing (historical) data held in databases (Oracle, SQLServer, DB2, MySQL) or datastores (Hadoop, Amazon Elastic MapReduce), a next-gen analytics solution needs to be able to analyze, filter and transform live data streams in realtime, with low latency, and to be able to "push" just the right data, at the right time, to users throughout the enterprise. With SQL/OLAP or Hadoop/MapReduce, users "pull" historical data via queries or programs to find what they need, but for many analytics scenarios today what's needed instead, to handle information overload is a continuous "realtime push" model where "the data finds the user".

Business analytics is a major established sector of the IT industry, but it's one that's ripe for disruption. Cloud analytics is hot. Gartner's top two strategic technologies for the enterprise in 2010 are cloud computing and advanced analytics. Venture capitalist Ann Winblad, in a recent video, points out that the coming era of realtime cloud analytics will have a revolutionary impact on the enterprise, creating a radically new "innovation palette" for businesses of all kinds.

Consuming Services with WCF

Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) is an effective framework for implementing services as well as service consumers. Whenever you deal with WCF communication objects you need to pay attention to the disposal of the resources that these objects hold. However, these disposal mechanisms are not that straightforward and are very much related to how resources need to be cleaned up. The how and why of cleaning up service resources is the topic of this article. Although the samples herein are focused on consuming services using synchronous communication, they are equally relevant for asynchronous communications...

A Case Study on SOA and Process

In this article I will present a step-by-step service-oriented solution development methodology and then describe how it is being used for the successful implementation of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) at a federal agency to integrate its financial systems with E-Gov Travel Services. I will discuss major service components constructed, service-oriented processes followed, business benefits gained, best practices used, and lessons learned. After reading the article, readers should have a good understanding of how SOA is used in real world situations to integrate large scale, highly valued, and mission critical information systems within and across enterprise boundaries...

Amazon RDS vs. SQL Azure

Back in July I wrote my post about databases in the cloud. The big surprise that I discovered at the time was that the only “Native” RDBMS offering in the cloud came from Microsoft. Microsoft SQL Azure (launching formally at the PDC in a few weeks) is a mostly-compatible SQL Server as a Service release complete with support for Transact SQL/TDS. SQL Azure is a multitenanted DBMS with several customers running databases up to 10GB in size on a single server. Their target is the 95% of business applications running in the enterprise that have databases with less than 5GB of data (based on their research). Well, Microsoft is alone no more.

Amazon Takes MySQL to the Cloud; or Has It?

Amazon have released a slew of new features and products for their cloud. But as usual, the devil is in the detail. I go into some of the issues and discover that this may not be for everyone
read more

Amazon Cuts Prices

With Windows Azure just around the corner, Amazon figured it was time to blink and cut prices on its core EC2 cloud services. Starting November 1 all Linux-based on-demand EC2 compute instances will cost 15% than they have. That means, it say, that, say, a Small Standard Linux-based instance will run 8.5 cents an hour of computing, not the current price of 10 cents an hour.
