Citrix & Carpathia Hosting Team Up

The companies plan to team on additional cloud offerings

Enterprise Cloud Computing Track at Cloud Expo

Carpathia Hosting, which reportedly has over 24 petabytes of storage under management and nearly 1% of all Internet traffic traversing its network, has built a second generation of its InstantOn enterprise cloud, on Citrix's XenServer technology.

The first version was based on open source Xen. The rev is based on the freebie Citrix XenServer 5.5, which is supposed to give it more flexibility, scale and management.

The widgetry is meant to deploy production-ready apps and storage in the company's 12 data centers in North America, Canada and Europe; blend dedicated and cloud resources in a single hybrid solution; or set up virtual private data centers and clouds.

Carpathia's good for multi-tenant or private clouds and claims to meet security and compliance requirements such as FISMA and DIACAP, financial standards such as PCI and healthcare criteria such as HIPAA.

Its infrastructure is now also fitted with NetScaler MPX, Citrix's application acceleration, load balancing and web security system.

It figures that using physical and virtual networking appliances together - the Citrix flex-tenancy architecture and the NetScaler Pay-As-You-Grow pricing model - it can offer customers "the most robust service levels in the marketplace today."

Under its partnership with Citrix, Carpathia plans to use the Florida company's virtualization and networking solutions to expand its portfolio of managed hosting services.

For Citrix, Carpathia is like a live lab and it means to use the seven-year-old hoster's knowledge of delivering complex managed hosting and cloud services to innovate around XenServer, NetScaler and Citrix Cloud Center (C3).

Underlying InstantOn solutions is Carpathia Cloud Orchestration, which seamlessly scales cloud and managed dedicated resources in a single solution so customers can decide which applications and services best fit the cloud and which should reside on dedicated infrastructure.

The companies plan to team on additional cloud offerings, including virtual desktop as a service and virtual development and test solutions for enterprises and government agencies.

InstantOn is accessed and managed through Carpathia's web-based E3 portal.

Virtual development & test is available and there's virtual disaster recovery, which Carpathia claims runs at a fraction of the cost of traditional disaster recovery solutions. Users pay for cloud resources on-demand during DR testing and DR events.

Carpathia is going to host one of SugarSync's private compute and storage clouds using NetScaler MPX. SugarSync provides a digital-sync online backup and sharing service so people can organize, manage, share and access all their files from any Mac, PC or mobile device. NetScaler MPX is supposed to let it expand its infrastructure by three times as performance and capacity requirements dictate, without incurring the heavy fixed costs of over-provisioning and the service interruptions of hardware upgrades.

The proliferation of device connectivity is redefining the functionality requirements and capabilities of many embedded systems as more and more of these devices look to leverage the “Cloud.” While many commercial software and hardware component vendors have begun to realign their value propositions to satisfy growing demand, commercial-off-the-shelf products (COTS) alone cannot meet every OEM’s needs. As a result, the Embedded Cloud has injected a new level of uncertainty and a new competitive ...
