Seattle Financial Group Standardizes on esXpress for esXpress' Business Optimization and Disaster Recovery

PHD Virtual Technologies, award-winning provider of esXpress, the fastest multi-VM backup and restore solution on the market, today announced that Seattle Bank has standardized backup of their virtual infrastructure on esXpress, thereby enabling same-day disaster recovery compared to their previous full day loss of business continuity.

Following the deployment of esXpress on two geographically distributed VMware ESX clusters, Seattle Bank has reduced its recovery time from one day to less than two hours with esXpress.

"Business optimization and disaster recovery readiness were key objectives for our organization," said Derin Bluhm, senior vice president and chief information officer of Seattle Financial Group, the holding company for Seattle Bank. "We needed to reduce our recovery point objective and put the business back online much more quickly in the event of a system failure. esXpress enabled us to do this."

With over $750 million in assets, Seattle Bank is an independent, local and entrepreneurial community bank based in Seattle, Washington. It has five banking centers in the Greater Puget Sound area. Affiliated companies include Seattle Escrow and Seattle Mortgage Company, one of the state's oldest independent mortgage banking firms.

Seattle Bank's growing data center, which holds almost 6TB of data, was experiencing the strain of extensive recovery time, a common issue in growing data centers. Using a traditional backup infrastructure with software from CommVault, the company had a recovery time frame of more than one business day with up to a day's data loss.

Looking to improve the company's disaster recovery responsiveness, Bluhm was introduced to PHD Virtual's esXpress and was impressed with how esXpress was able to protect data from inside the virtual machine infrastructure itself, without any added hardware or software investments. What Bluhm was most pleased with, though, was how rapidly esXpress could restore the company's systems in the event of a disaster.

"esXpress has been a huge win for our organization," said Bluhm. "It has reduced our recovery point from one business day to less than two hours, and we are now working to reduce that even further to just 15 minutes. The speed of esXpress, which was faster than any other product we looked at, allowing us to fully restore a server and have it back online in minutes. That peace of mind was enough to justify our investment in two ESX clusters."

esXpress is the market's fastest multi-VM backup and data protection solution that backups and restores virtual machine data to existing disc or tape. Key benefits of esXpress to Seattle Bank include:

  • Being an affordable solution that works in concert with Seattle Bank's current storage and virtual environments
  • Increasing the company's multi-VM backup speed via 16 concurrent backup streams per ESX host
  • Reducing backup window and storage capacity requirements through esXpress' source-side global de-duplication across the company's ESX farm
  • Reducing Seattle Bank's recovery time by 92% as a result of esXpress' multi-user instant file-level restore features
  • Reducing Bluhm's virtualization administrator's time through esXpress' self-restore capability and self-extracting backup archives
  • Peace of mind as a result of genuine fault tolerance if one VM generated by esXpress to backup fails, esXpress automatically generates another.

Why are APIs so important in clouds? Do APIs have to be open? How fast or slow will standardization in the cloud be? Why is ensuring high availability for the cloud service critical? In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, Mårten Mickos, CEO of Eucalyptus Systems, will answer these questions and address cloud standards, APIs and the critical question: Will we end up with one, two or more competing cloud standards? The proliferation of device connectivity is redefining the functionality requirements and capabilities of many embedded systems as more and more of these devices look to leverage the “Cloud.” While many commercial software and hardware component vendors have begun to realign their value propositions to satisfy growing demand, commercial-off-the-shelf products (COTS) alone cannot meet every OEM’s needs. As a result, the Embedded Cloud has injected a new level of uncertainty and a new competitive ...
