Fujitsu's Kazuo Ishida Discusses Cloud Computing

Exclusive Interview Elaborates on Company's Vision

Fujitsu recently unveiled a Cloud Computing vision entailing four modes of consumption: infrastructure, application, activity, and content. It said it will offer its customers "non-disruptive" ways of working within any or all of these modes.

Intrigued, we contacted Tokyo to see if we could learn more from corporate senior vice president Kazuo Ishida, who is one of two key executives (the other is in London) driving this new vision.

More than 50 Customers So Far
He told us "more than 50 customers have signed up for the IaaS trial service currently being offered in Japan" and that he believes Fujitsu is "building a strong set of offerings to help customers, with large existing infrastructure investments, benefit from cloud services in all four modes as they mature. In a general sense, we are targeting large and medium-sized customers; private and public sector customers; new and existing customers; and ICT buyers."

We asked him about SaaS, PaaS, IaaS and whether they were being offered worldwide. He noted that all three are already offered in Japan, and said that "the current global announcement is in regards to IaaS, (but) SaaS and PaaS will eventually be deployed globally as well."

The Competition
We also asked, "does the company plan to compete with Amazon, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Cisco for the IaaS business?" His response: "Although it looks as though we are offering a service that goes up against our competitors, such as Google and Amazon, we don't see any direct head-on-head competition as the services that we offer are an enhancement of those necessary and reliable functions required by companies and other enterprises."

He didn't want to be more specific, noting that Fujitsu "does not comment on particular competitors, but we intend to stress the strength of our networking capabilities as an essential part of our offer, especially where end-user responsiveness is important."

As far as security goes, Ishida-san said that Fujitsu is "offering specific security levels," and he said the company's "IaaS services' SLA guarantees 99.99% availability."

He said Fujitsu didn't have a figure at this time regarding how much revenue Cloud Computing markets will generate globally. When we asked about how influential Fujitsu intends to be as a worldwide Cloud Computing leader, he referred to his quote about Fujitsu's "human-centric approach" that he made in the original announcement a couple of weeks ago.

Part of that quote also stated, "In Japan, we have been successful in conducting trials involving ICT infrastructures in areas such as agriculture and healthcare. Through these offerings, we aim to become a leader in providing these types of services around the world."

He added to those remarks the fact that Fujitsu now has 91 datacenters in 16 countries, and that "recently, we opened the Fujitsu Trusted Cloud Square in Hamamatsu-cho, Tokyo, which will function both as a showroom where customers can gain hands-on experience with the company's technologies, products, and services for cloud computing; and as a facility for testing ICT systems."
