Richard Stone to Discuss How Cloud Is Driving A Fundamental Shift in the Way Organizations Build, Deploy, & Use Applications

Cloud Computing is driving a fundamental shift in the way organizations build, deploy and use applications, and it's raising expectations on how quickly and cost-effectively new IT functionality can be made available to the business. And even though the delivery chain for these "borderless applications" now crosses organizational and geographic boundaries, users will still expect the applications to perform well, and they will hold IT accountable if they don't. For its part, IT is faced with managing an increasingly complex and diverse delivery chain, consisting of maybe dozens of service and content providers spread around the world.

The challenge for IT is to meet the business expectation of faster delivery of new functionality, while at the same time maintaining end-to-end visibility and control of application performance and availability across an inter-dependent, but independent, network of service providers.

In this general session at the 6th International Cloud Expo, Richard Stone, Senior Telecom Solution Manager at Compuware, will provide some real-world insight into how companies are successfully addressing this challenge, including details of how they can get objective, real-time data on the performance and availability of their prospective cloud service providers to assist them in their decision-making process."

Speaker Bio:
Richard Stone is Senior Telecom Solution Manager at Compuware, responsible for the marketing of the company's solutions for Mobile Network Operators. Prior to joining Compuware, he held senior marketing and product management positions at Hewlett Packard, Compaq, plus a number of other US and European IT companies. At HP, Stone was responsible for the company's range of smartphone and PDA solutions, including device management, data security, and business productivity applications.

When building large, cloud-based applications that operate at a high scale, it's important to maintain a high availability and resilience to failures. In order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures in other areas of your application. "Fly two mistakes high" is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby. It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue flying with room to still make mistakes. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee Atchison, Principal Cloud Architect and Advocate at New Relic, discussed how this same philosophy can be applied to highly scaled applications, and can dramatically increase your resilience to failure.

Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by sharing information within the building and with outside city infrastructure via real time shared cloud capabilities.
