InterCloud Case Study in Advanced Automatic Collision Notification

Cloud to Cloud Federation - An Auto Industry Case Study

Cloud federation  allows enterprises to move workloads seamlessly across multiple internal and/or external clouds according to business and application requirements.

This concept is also elaborated  with a key word ‘ Inter-Cloud' which is the next step about private clouds connected together.

This terminology of inter-cloud has been popularized by cisco (www.cisco.com) , which gives the following attributes for  inter cloud

  • A federation of Clouds (Both Public & Private) based on Open Standards
  • Dynamic Work Load Migration
  • Naming / Discovery
  • Trust
  • Seamless Integration

In Vehicle Safety & Security Systems A Perfect  Case For Clouds
Most automobile OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers)  provide  in-vehicle safety and security system created to help protect the car driver and family on the road.  These systems uses a combination of firmware, sensors , mobile technologies and satellite communication and  SOA based back end support to satisfy the needs of the subscribed drivers.

For example one of the  famous  In Vehicle Safety & Security System Onstar (www.onstar.com)  provides the following features,

  • 24-hour access to expertly trained, caring Advisors
  • A connection to emergency assistance
  • Access to OnStar Hands-Free Calling

There are several other  OEM also provide  similar Vehicle Safety & Security System, this article is not about comparing OEMs on this service, rather how this service is a good candidate for Cloud enablement and how  inter-clouding can help to save the lives of accident victims who may be using a car fitted with this service.

How the Cloud Tenants  fit the ‘On Car Vehicle Safety & Security Systems'.  The below attributes of this Service makes it a perfect candidate for deployment on cloud platform.

  • It is catalogue based to let the users to pick up the services they wanted
  • It has the tendency of Cloud Burst & Dynamic infrastructure will be most efficient for example a travel heavy day like a memorial day week end the number of calls to this service may exponentially increase and at the same time on a mid working day the number of calls may reduce
  • It needs Rapid Provisioning and a end user cannot wait for long
  • It should support flexible pricing options

Automatic Crash Response
A  important variant of these kind of safety service is,  Automatic Crash Response , again the OnStar official web site explains Automatic Crash Response As :

"In a crash, air bag sensors can automatically alert OnStar. An Advisor is immediately connected into your vehicle to see if you are okay, and can direct emergency help to your exact GPS location - even if you are unable to ask for it. On most newer models, built-in crash sensors can also automatically send an alert even if air bags do not deploy, and transmit critical crash details. "

Inter Cloud At Work In a Automobile Crash Situation
As we have seen that Cloud Platform is ideal for deploying a  "In Vehicle Safety And Security System". However in a crash situation  the time to respond with the appropriate details is the key difference between life and death and a Cloud Provider (OEM or a provider of In Vehicle Safety System)  have unlimited possibilities to collaborate with other public and private clouds which will all go towards  saving a life.

  • If the Driver is Unconscious and could not able to Speak, the Cloud that hosts the Safety Services can federate with the Clouds of Public or Private that concerns with Emergency and medical services and transfer the Work load information about
    • Location Of the Vehicle
    • Crash Information that is gathered like severity of crash, direction of impact, airbag information and other impacts like rollover
  • If the Driver is stable but if the vehicle is damaged or require assistance to get out of the situation then the primary OEM cloud provider can move the workload to another OEM cloud provider with a similar service, if the Second OEM provider has a better network in the particular state or region that the crash has happened.
  • Even integrating with Insurance Companies owned private Clouds , the Safety Service can provide the information about the Registered Drivers of the Vehicle (there is a high probability that the Insured Driver of the Vehicle likely to drive that car too) like
    • Age
    • Blood Group
    • Medical Conditions Like having high Blood Pressure etc...
    • This information along with the primary information about the Crash can be enriched (Refer to VETO Pattern -Validate Enrich Transform and Operate) and the work load can be moved to a Health Care provider Cloud for quickest possible service that is relevant to the Victim.

The diagram below,  explains the above concepts

Cloud federation is much like rest of the portions of Cloud is a new area in cloud computing. The above case study is one scenario where this could be effective and there could be many more. The standards and framework  on this front will emerge shortly from key players and it will makes it more interesting and useful.
