Cloud Computing Sells Itself: the View from Netflix

Public cloud wins on agility and price

The CloudScaling blog scores something of a coup with its interview of Netflix’ Cloud Architect, Adrian Cockcroft. As everyone should know, NetFlix moved its core business application to Amazon Web Services, including “encoding movies for streaming, log analysis, production web site and API, most everything that scales with customers and streaming usage”.

This Porticor blog has always avoided the debate about public vs. private clouds. Our attitude is simple: we don’t sell cloud, Cloud Computing sells itself.

Netflix’ story is a case in point. The numbers quoted mean that a lot of enterprises will be seeing the value of moving to the public cloud. They do not hem nor haw: public cloud wins on agility and price.

Once a customer has bought into the cloud idea, our job at Porticor is to secure their data in a cloud environment. We find a lot of customers talk to us, at the point where they have already decided in favor of public cloud, and they are wondering how to secure their data. In fact, here is a very typical customer mind set that we are seeing:

  • Customer IT has already decided they want to do a project in the public cloud – we are not “selling cloud” to them, they have already bought in
  • Customer IT has evaluated what they would feel comfortable putting in the cloud; we can recommend a methodology (such as here), but basically it’s their call
  • Customer IT understands that – in IaaS/PaaS environments – they still retain some responsibility for the security and privacy of their project and data; we can help them with that by providing an SLA
  • Customer IT is asking the questions: “how to meet our responsibility, how to do security reasonably, and what are the tools to use?”; they come to Porticor to hear some answers and take the pain out of achieving solutions

Recently, at the Cloud Security Association, we gave a talk to security professionals from hundreds of IT organizations. It was striking how such a wide and varied audience of naturally careful security experts, needs precisely these kinds of pragmatic answers to proceed with their cloud projects.

We will be publishing that talk in a separate blog post

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next-gen applications and how to address the challenges of building applications that harness all data types and sources.
