Unbreakable Storage in the Cloud?

Amplidata has announced the availability of the AmpliStor AS20

Amplidata, an object storage technology company specializing in petabyte-scale, unstructured data storage, has announced the availability of the AmpliStor AS20, a 1U rackable 20 Terabyte storage unit that uses Intel’s Atom microprocessor, consuming just 7watts per terabyte.

Amplidata is a Belgium startup spun off from Incubaid, which claims to have developed unbreakable storage with 10 nines reliability and 50-70% lower storage overhead. If that’s in fact the case, that will make life a lot easier for those companies developing Cloud based storage video service offerings like YouTube and Vimeo.

Paul Speciale, VP of Products for Amplidata, walked me through their BitSpread encoding and decoding approach which eliminates the need for RAID, multiple copies, or replication, all while consuming 90% less power, and at 50-70% lower CAPEX/OPEX than existing disk solutions.

The technology splits up a block of data into multiple blocks and spreads it across multiple nodes. It can then reconstruct the original data from a subset of the total number of blocks. A bit like solving a sudoku puzzle – with some of the data you can solve the rest of the puzzle.

Amplidata offers its solution to companies seeking to build storage cloud service offerings to store photos, HD movies, video, medical images, and other large-scale digital media applications.

Competitors in the segment include EMC, with its Atmos solution, IBM, NetApp, and HP, though Amplidata is trying to carve out its niche in the space with its solution supporting large-scale object storage implementations in a more efficient and lower cost model.
