Technology Excellence - Achieving Savings, Efficiencies and Agility in the Cloud

Lone Star College implemented an IT transformation program to add business value by enabling a robust IT environment that provides high availability and fosters innovation. Enabled by solutions and services from EMC and VMware, the college moved its data center from a 5% to 93% virtualized environment - including their mission critical applications such as Oracle ERP - in under 18 months. This transformation increased the college's business agility with the delivery of new IT services from three months to less than one week. Additionally, Lone Star College saved more than $600,000 in operational expenses, reduced energy usage by 66% and achieved five nines availability for all critical applications, an accomplishment that shows the commitment of its Board of Trustees, administration and dedicated Office of Technology Services staff to leverage technology to gain critical efficiencies. Core technologies at Lone Star College include VMware vSphere®, VMware vCloud® Director, VMware vCenter(TM) Site Recovery Manager, all integrated with EMC Unified and EMC Symmetrix® VMAXe(TM) storage, both using EMC FAST automated tiering software, and protected by EMC RecoverPoint and EMC Avamar®.

Operational Transformation - Accelerating the Journey to the Cloud

Northern Hospital of Surry County overhauled IT operations with minimal downtime and no interruption to patient care by increasing server utilization and accelerating its move from a 75% to 100% virtualized environment. Deploying EMC and VMware technologies across its two data centers, the hospital migrated an entire production data center with no downtime, eliminated 20 physical servers and reduced network congestion and backup storage requirements by 80%. By using VMware software and VPLEX® Metro virtual storage technology to create a new standardized data center infrastructure, the hospital ensured a seamless data center migration, avoided more than 50 hours of down time and ensured the continuity of care of all Northern Hospital patients.
