Virtustream Buys Enomaly

What obviously attracted Virtustream is Enomaly’s Amazon-like cloud capacity brokerage, SpotCloud

A match has been made in the clouds.

Toronto-based cloud pioneer Enomaly is selling out to enterprise IaaS supplier Virtustream, headquartered in Maryland outside of Washington, DC.

Terms are being kept secret but, since eight-year-old Enomaly was bootstrapped, there won't be any VCs to pay off. The deal should go down in the first quarter.

What obviously attracted Virtustream is Enomaly's Amazon-like cloud capacity brokerage, SpotCloud, a start-up global marketplace where compute and storage capacities can be bought and sold.

The widgetry is now in beta, reportedly with thousands of registered users, but Virtustream says it won't let the thing go into production without reinforcing its security and making it generally more robust first.

It says it also wants to improve SpotCloud's workload exchange with its own xStream Infrastructure Unit (IU), a Virtustream-patented "cloud atomic element" or extensible container of compute, memory, bandwidth and IOPS that's smaller than a virtual machine and is supposed to make for highly efficient cloud management.

It means to scavenge SpotCloud components for a future Virtustream product suite that includes a trusted exchange serving customers looking for business-class cloud federation using its xStream cloud ecosystem. Reportedly that will be available in 2012 or 13.

The xStream cloud platform is available now and offers off-premise virtual private cloud services, off-premise public cloud services and on-premise private cloud enablement software.

Virtustream is also high on the idea that Enomaly has carved out a space in China. It means to leverage that position to accelerate its own expansion in the Asia-Pacific region and up-sell Enomaly's customer base to the xStream Cloud Platform's broader capabilities. It's already got a strategic partnership with XYBase to drive cloud adoption in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Virtustream said it will continue to support released versions of Enomaly's software products. Presumably that means its private-cloud management products, its Elastic Computing Platform and its High Assurance Edition, despite its own xStream. Eventually the Enomaly IP will disappear into Virtustream.

Virtustream owns and operates its own data centers in the US and UK. Its clients include some big firms like Domino Foods and Yum Brands

Enomaly founder and cloud evangelist Reuven Cohen said in a statement, "Virtustream is ideally positioned to capitalize on the needs of complex enterprises migrating to the cloud."

Virtustream was started in 2008 and has raised $35.4 million in financing from Intel Capital among others.
