Big Data Revolution – What exactly is Big Data and what can you do with it? What are some of the considerations if you need to run a high-performance production system? In a 10th Cloud Expo session called "Big Data Revolution" delegates can join the team fro GoGrid and learn how one of its customers leverages the power of Big Data and the scalability of the cloud to vastly improve its product.
Big Data Tools – In a session titled "The Growing Big Data Tools Landscape: Choosing the Right One for Your Enterprise", Chief Strategy Officer for GCE, David Lucas [Speaker Profile], will be running through what enterprises really need to know about the growing set of big data tools - both those being leveraged by organizations today as well as the new and innovative tools just arriving on the scene. "Hadoop, MapReduce, Hive, HBase, Lucene, Solr?" says Lucas. "The only thing growing faster than enterprise data these days is the landscape of big data tools."
Big Unstructured Data – In a session titled "Best Practices for Big Unstructured Data Storage", Tom Leyden [Speaker Profile] of Amplidata will explain what Big Unstructured Data is (lots of large, unstructured files) and how you build scalable storage infrastructures that can handle such volumes of data. Tom's focus will be on Object Storage - the future storage paradigm that uses concepts of cloud computing to optimize the back-end storage for cloud applications.
Case Studies – With cloud computing having moved so conclusively now from being a noun to a verb, 10th Cloud Expo abounds in case studies featuring real-world implementations of cloud-based solutions. One good example is the session entitled "Cloud Triumphs and Pitfalls: Lessons from Commonwealth Bank of Australia", in which ServiceMesh Sr. VP Dave Roberts [Speaker Profile] combines with Jon Waldron, Executive Architect at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, to explore key lessons learned by the largest bank in Australia during the rollout of multiple enterprise-wide, private cloud services. Consolidation of Big Data in the Cloud – IT managers are dealing with growing constraints on space, power and costs to manage their data center infrastructure, which is why Cloud Expo 2012 New York Platinum sponsor Intel is bringing together a broad network of leading hardware and solution providers to build and enhance cloud solutions that are interoperable, multi-vendor and embrace open standards. In a General Session entitled "Managing the Explosive Growth and Consolidation of Big Data in the Cloud" Intel will be joined by key partners on-stage to talk about the latest Cloud solutions and service offerings that they are offering based on Intel architecture.
Copyright and the Cloud – Widespread adoption new cloud functionality is bringing dramatic changes in the ecology and characteristics of content use and re-use. As cloud-based content usage increases, so-called "repertory-style" licensing will likely become an ever more critical and indispensable part of the toolkit for collaboration and content-sharing. Hear all about it in the 10th Cloud Expo session "Copyright and the Cloud: Publishing, Content Workflow and Licensing" being given by Christopher Kenneally, Director of Business Development at Copyright Clearance Center.
Dark Side of Virtualization – What are the types of situations when you should consider not virtualizing some of your applications? Reasons might range from technical to legal to IT ops to politics to finances. In his 10th Cloud Expo session, Dave Asprey [Speaker Profile], VP of Cloud Security at Trend Micro, will be giving a true IT insider’s guide to the truth about virtualization. Dave's session is called, in full: "The Dark Side of Virtualization: Ten Situations Where Virtualization Won’t Improve Security, Performance, or Availability".

Enterprise Transformation Using the Cloud – Cloud is a shift from the focus on underlying technology implementation to leveraging existing implementations and further building upon them. In his session at 10th Cloud Expo, the CTO of the U.S. Dept. Justice, Ajay Budhraja [Speaker Profile], will discuss how for example the requirement to access multiple clouds will cause a shift towards utilizing identity management services and single sign-on capabilities."With cloud services," he says, "a traditional project that just obtained survey information from customers and provided reports can be transitioned to leverage an authentication service, cloud customer information service, cloud reporting service and other cloud services to provide a scalable, highly integrated solution quickly."
Ethernet SAN – see Scale-out Storage
Eucalyptus – As datasets grow in size and numbers in the enterprise, there needs to be a place to store, secure and analyze the datasets. An IaaS cloud like Eucalyptus can be “the place” to enable enterprises to deploy Big Data analytics and applications. That, anyway, will be the contention made by Eucalyptus Systems' Director of Product Management, Govind Rangasamy, in his New York session "Running Big Data Applications on Eucalyptus IaaS Cloud". Since the Euca cloud has the industry's de-facto standard IaaS API implementation, Govind will be able to make a powerful case! Eucalyptus also already has a vast ecosystem of Big Data industry partners.
Hadoop – As the saying (now) goes, "if it's partionable, it's Hadoopable"...and truly Apache Hadoop is front, left and center nowadays at any event featuring Cloud Computing & Big Data, and ours is no exception. Sessions include: "Apache Hadoop: Now, Next, and Beyond" by the Co-Founder & CEO of Hortonworks, Eric Baldeschwieler [Speaker Profile]; "Crash Course In Open Source Cloud Computing" by Citrix's Mark Hinkle [Speaker Profile];
Hadoop: Now, Next, and Beyond – One highly popular session in June is certain to be the one on Hadoop being given by the Co-Founder & CEO of Hortonworks, Eric Baldeschwieler [Speaker Profile]. Eric was the engineer responsible, while he was at Yahoo!, for building and managing the team that took Apache Hadoop from a prototype to a system Yahoo! uses on 42,000 computers. In his session, he will discuss the exciting developments that have happened recently with the Apache Hadoop project, what is has already accomplished (including real-world examples), and what it is going to make possible in the future.
HBase – see Big Data Tools
Hive – see Big Data Tools
Hybrid Cloud – The reality is that every IT organization will face a mixed deployment model going forward, which is why the 10th Cloud Expo session by HyperStratus CEO Bernard Golden [Speaker Profile] will address the opportunities and constraints IT organizations confront as they chart their hybrid cloud future. "Endless discussion about the 'right' cloud delivery model has not produced a consensus," says Bernard. "Instead, the cacophony of discussion resembles a Fox News Show - all talking points and no enlightenment." According he proposes to get beyond that and on to much more useful, real-world discussion in his session entitled, tellingly, "Private vs. Public vs. Hybrid: Moving Beyond the Soundbites".
HPC in the Cloud – High-Performance Computing (HPC) and the Cloud make a cost-effective duo. Something called "process level virtualization" technology - with a very low footprint to create a robust and fault-tolerant virtual private cloud - can leverage existing IT infrastructure and achieve supercomputing performance at lower cost "and with zero management and integration effort" according to Eyal Maor, entrepreneur and CEO of Xoreax. He'll be giving a session at 10th Cloud Expo called "Achieving Cost-Effective HPC in the Cloud Through Process Level Virtualization".
IaaS Cloud – see also Eucalyptus
IaaS Cloud Services for Windows & Linux – Can efficient and powerful hardware, used along with both open source and proprietary software, be ulitilized to achieve an ideal balance between performance vs cost? Mike Carpenter, VP Business Development with CARI.net, believes so and his 10th Cloud Expo session "Architecting the Full Performance Potential of IaaS Cloud Services For Windows, Linux And Appliances" aims to explain how. "There is a gentle yet optimal balance between performance, redundancy and capacity," MIke will explain.
Infrastructure Planning & Control – In his 10th Cloud Expo session, CiRBA's CTO & Co-founder Andrew Hillier will be outlining best practices for gaining control over dynamic capacity supply and workload demand in large-scale virtual and cloud infrastructure. His session is called "Infrastructure Planning & Control in Next Generation Data Centers" and he'll be discussing in detail how leading Fortune 500 organizations have brought together infrastructure teams, capacity teams and application owners to increase agility, reduce risk and costs by optimizing infrastructure planning and management processes.
Identity Management – see Enterprise Transformation Using the Cloud
IT As Innovation Leadership – The opportunity for today’s IT leaders is to transform IT by leveraging the new ecosystem of services that liberate IT from a technology focus to an information and innovation focus. In a 10th Cloud Expo session by Rich Taggart, a Lead Partner at SHI and former SVP and Corporate CIO of the Walt Disney Company, will be offering a step by step approach to revitalizing IT as an innovation leadership organization. Mission-Critical Applications in the Cloud – How have the latest cloud computing designs evolved recently in terms of security, availability, and overall service quality to meet the needs of mission-critical applications? That is the crucial question for many Cloud Expo delegates, and it is one that will be answered in June by SHI’s Chief Technologist and Managing Partner Henry Fastert, whose Opening Keynote at 10th Cloud Expo - on June 11, 2012 - will be asserting that the latest generation of cloud computing is now demonstrably capable of addressing the needs of the enterprise mission critical applications. Henry will also share insight on how cloud designs can handle high availability service levels (Security, Performance, High Availability).
Mobile Cloud – As workers continue to demand business apps on their connected devices, the mobile cloud will play a key role in changing the enterprise IT landscape forever. In his session at 10th Cloud Expo called "Embracing the Mobile Cloud from Start to Finish", the President & Founder of Keynote DeviceAnywhere, Faraz Syed, will be discussing how, to make it work, companies must plan for the whole application lifecycle from development and testing through to monitoring, or risk failing to realize the full potential of the mobile cloud.
Network-Based Cloud Computing – The importance of an enterprise-grade network at the center of cloud services cannot be overstated, according to Steve Caniano, VP of Hosting, Application & Cloud Services at AT&T Business Solutions. The optimum cloud, Caniano contends, is one where cloud services are actually embedded in the network. "A network-based cloud allows cloud services and applications to be managed and delivered as part of a total solution straight down to any device just like voice and data," Caniano states. His session at Cloud Expo 2012 New York, "The Cloud and the Network – a Match Made in Heaven" will discuss how this unique approach can offer enterprises the scale and flexibility of the cloud, without sacrificing performance, reliability and security.
Next Generation Data Centers – see Infrastructure Planning & Control
Open Source Cloud Computing – In his sure-to-be-packed "Crash Course In Open Source Cloud Computing" session, popular Cloud Expo speaker Mark Hinkle [Speaker Profile] will, as Mark puts it, "cut through the hype and quickly clarify the ontology for cloud computing." The session will appeal to anyone who has a good grasp of traditional data center infrastructure, but is struggling with the benefits and migration path to a cloud computing environment, he adds. "Systems administrators and IT generalists will leave the discussion with a general overview of the options at their disposal to effectively build and manage their own cloud computing environments using free and open source software," Mark - who is Director, Cloud Computing Community at Citrix - says.

PostgreSQL – DBAs should consider PostgreSQL to move database operations to public and private clouds. That, at least, is the view of Karen Padir, executive vice president of products and engineering at EnterpriseDB. In her 10th Cloud Expo session in New York, Karen will be explaining why, as well as providing delegates with tips and tricks to using PostgreSQL as the backend database for hybrid/private/public cloud environments. Her session is entitled, simply: "Why PostgreSQL is the Database for the Cloud".
Private PaaS – In her June session in NYC entitled "Private PaaS for the Enterprise & Beyond", ActiveState's Cloud Evangelist Diane Mueller will be discussing how Private PaaS technology gives control over where, when and how the cloud is leveraged. "I'll be showing Cloud Expo delegates how you can extend & ensure your private cloud investment with a private Platform-as-a-Service and provide on-demand availability, flexibility, control, and ultimately, faster time-to-market for your development teams," Diane says.

Scale-out Storage – In a session by Coraid CEO Kevin Brown, "Cloud Architectures Require Scale-out Storage", Cloud Expo delegates will be able in New York to learn how organizations are leveraging Ethernet SAN as the storage backbone of their dynamic public and private cloud architectures. "Virtualization combined with x86 servers has transformed the way we scale out compute resources," notes Brown. "Unfortunately, legacy Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage architectures are rooted in rigid mainframe-era designs, and are fundamentally mismatched with the dynamic, shared modern data center," he continues. Whereas with Ethernet SAN, he adds, "capacity and performance both scale linearly with user demand without forcing users into a complex tiered storage environment to deal with price-performance tradeoffs."
Scaling Big Data in the Cloud – What does it take to implement a comprehensive data infrastructure, including your core database, incorporating SQL, No SQL and Big Data platforms? This and other questions will be answered by Cory Isaacson, CEO of CodeFutures, in his session at 10th Cloud Expo. Based on his real-world experience as maker of dbShards with dozens of high-volume, data intensive applications, Cory will be nailing the whole topic of "Scaling Big Data in the Cloud" and will also be helping Cloud Expo delegates decide: which database technology is best for your application?
Secure Cloud Computing – Security features in many of the sessions at 10th Cloud Expo. In "How To Build a Secure Cloud Service", for example, CloudPassage VP Rand Wacker will be breaking down the top security considerations that are specific to the cloud and offering practical steps for securing cloud-based application development. Rand's session will include real-world success stories of self-protecting and autonomous servers in the cloud that are surviving the higher exposure level to threats and vulnerabilities.
Server Virtualization – As datacenters expand and cloud computing becomes a reality, there are challenges to implementing a one-size-fits-all strategy. In a 10th Cloud Expo session called "Server Virtualization: How to Choose the Right System for your Workload", ScaleMP Founder & CTO Shai Fultheim will discuss the ROI of implementing server virtualization for aggregation, and best practices for using it to achieve maximum benefits.
