Pragmatic Cloud: Why some clouds fail to deliver

By George Watt, CA Technologies

Recently in ZDNet, Keith Allen of CA Technologies gave his perspective of how cloud computing can have a positive impact on customer satisfaction, and perhaps even reduce the likelihood of rogue IT. Drawing on his personal experience as a sysadmin, Keith addresses some of the key changes required in order to improve service levels, business capabilities, and customer satisfaction.

Though if that is the complete picture, why do we hear stories of organizations that have done those things – that have brought in automation, virtualization, and cloud technologies – and remain unable to improve service to their customers; or at least not improve it enough. Well, as legendary broadcaster Paul Harvey might say, stay tuned for… “the rest of the story.” Read the full article.

Cloud Views

  • Cloud apps, big data and the wisdom of swarms: This ZDNet article describes what SaaS vendors who are debating how to mine their stores of big data can learn from Siri’s approach to deciphering voice recognition.
  • Comparing participation in open source cloud communities: this Computerworld article identifies that Eucalyptus has the largest standing community, but OpenStack and CloudStack are gaining momentum in the developer community.
  • ZDnet blogger Joe McKendrick believes that cloud presents a golden opportunity for IT to get out in front and lead, and that IT organizations are quickly becoming ‘Innovation Teams.’ Read more in this article.

MSP Corner

  • The Ingram Micro Cloud is now promoting CA ARCserve (with MSP licensing) and a CA disaster recovery service hosted in Microsoft’s Windows Azure cloud. This Talkin’ Cloud article describes why the Ingram and CA Technologies relationship is worth tracking.
  • Strategies for MSP differentiation in the cloud: This CRN article recommends differentiation by focusing on security and compliance, while this MSP News article recommends vertical market specialization.

We all know that end users experience the Internet primarily with mobile devices. From an app development perspective, we know that successfully responding to the needs of mobile customers depends on rapid DevOps – failing fast, in short, until the right solution evolves in your customers' relationship to your business. Whether you’re decomposing an SOA monolith, or developing a new application cloud natively, it’s not a question of using microservices – not doing so will be a path to eventual b...
More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smart...

HyperConvergence came to market with the objective of being simple, flexible and to help drive down operating expenses. It reduced the footprint by bundling the compute/storage/network into one box. This brought a new set of challenges as the HyperConverged vendors are very focused on their own proprietary building blocks. If you want to scale in a certain way, let's say you identified a need for more storage and want to add a device that is not sold by the HyperConverged vendor, forget about it...
Enterprises are moving to the cloud faster than most of us in security expected. CIOs are going from 0 to 100 in cloud adoption and leaving security teams in the dust. Once cloud is part of an enterprise stack, it’s unclear who has responsibility for the protection of applications, services, and data. When cloud breaches occur, whether active compromise or a publicly accessible database, the blame must fall on both service providers and users. In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Ben Johnson, C...
It is of utmost importance for the future success of WebRTC to ensure that interoperability is operational between web browsers and any WebRTC-compliant client.
