New Releases of CA's Mainframe Database Management Tools for DB2 and IMS Increase Availability, Streamline Performance and Optimize Backup and Recovery

Enable Database Administrators to Focus on Strategic Projects

ISLANDIA, N.Y., May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CA today announced new releases of its Unicenter Database Management solutions that improve service levels, data availability and application responsiveness across DB2 UDB for z/OS and IMS for z/OS databases. The enhancements enable database administrators to simplify and automate routine administrative tasks, allowing them to spend more time on strategic projects.

"Our mainframe databases drive our ability to deliver safe, reliable, high-quality electric energy service to more than half a million customers at a reasonable cost," said Rick Lovell, software systems engineer, Westar Energy. "By continuing to enhance its DB2 for z/OS management tools, CA is once again helping us keep the lights on across Kansas even as we take aggressive measures to reduce our technology ownership costs."

CA's new Unicenter Database Management r11.5 for DB2 UDB for z/OS is an integrated set of tools that optimize database performance, administration, and backup and recovery. Enhancements include extended support for DB2 UDB for z/OS v8 as well as a number of important usability improvements, such as:

-- Greater flexibility in naming of indexes and objects with improved long name support -- Accelerated problem identification with enhanced data sharing and displays, such as aggregate or individual data level views -- Enhanced database availability during maintenance tasks with support for online schema evolution -- Improved problem analysis and regulatory compliance with extended object support and log tracking to identify and assess changes -- Accelerated copying, reorganization and recovery tasks with support for new partitioning schemes

"As a government agency, our mission is to help connect our citizens to jobs, and we gather massive amounts of data to provide this service," said Shaun Lombard, assistant director of Database Administration, Australia's Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. "The new release of CA's database management tools will provide features that fully satisfy all our requirements for managing our DB2 environments efficiently, ensuring the stability and availability of our online job services."

"We process nearly 200,000 patent applications each year and depend on CA's Unicenter Database Management solutions to maintain the integrity of the data in our enormous DB2 databases," said Phillipe Herman, DB2 systems administrator, European Patent Office. "The expanded analysis capabilities will help us identify and fix problems quickly and continue to deliver high-availability services to our customers."

CA has also streamlined deployment and usability of its Unicenter Database Management r11.5 for IMS, giving database administrators new capabilities to:

-- Ensure access to related IMS databases with faster prefix resolution -- Create intelligent backup and recovery strategies for IMS -- Reorganize indexes for high-availability large databases and full- function IMS databases for improved performance -- Exploit hardware for greater availability during backup processing -- Accomplish IMS online reorganizations with minimal to no impact on running batch message processing

"As mainframes continue to shoulder most of an enterprise's growing data processing workload, the need for more intelligent and automated database management tools is greater than ever," said David Schipper, vice president of product management, CA. "With these new releases, CA is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to this market. By incorporating critical capabilities into our core products, CA is also making mainframe management simpler and less expensive for our customers."

CA's Unicenter Database Management r11.5 for IMS for z/OS is available immediately. Unicenter Database Management r11.5 for DB2 for z/OS v8 is scheduled to ship later this quarter. Earlier this month, CA announced its intention to deliver "day-one" support for DB2 v9 for z/OS when that product becomes generally available.

As more enterprises are adopting clouds, the nature of cloud computing is changing. Previously, clouds were used to test applications or for non-mission critical applications. Today, enterprises are using clouds for cost-saving advantages and launching more mission critical applications that have defined performance needs. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, Eric Shepcaro, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Telx, will discuss how distributed computing has many advantages. It wou...
Building a cloud computing environment with on-demand access to compute, network, and storage resources requires an elastic infrastructure at multiple levels. Virtualization combined with x86 servers has transformed the way we scale out compute resources. Unfortunately, legacy Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage architectures are rooted in rigid mainframe-era designs, and are fundamentally mismatched with the dynamic, shared modern data center. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, ...

2011 was a year of rapid adoption for public and private cloud services. Instant and on-demand server provisioning was the driving force behind the massive growth. On top, cloud server templates and script automation simplified application installation for simple and pre-defined application stacks, but have not targeted more complex enterprise application environments. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, John Yung, CEO of Appcara, will discuss how 2012 will be the year for app...
