Eucalyptus to Open Source Everything It’s Got

Eucalyptus figures the move will accelerate on-premise cloud innovation

Eucalyptus Systems, which is supposed to have the most widely deployed on-premise cloud computing platform, will be pushing out the 3.1 rev of its widgetry next week.

The company will open source all of the system's accumulated features up to this point, including the high availability of Eucalyptus 3, so the community and supported enterprises are aligned on the same platform.

Eucalyptus figures the move will accelerate on-premise cloud innovation by making it easy for the open source community to develop enterprise-grade on-premise IaaS clouds.

CEO Marten Mickos says, "Eucalyptus 3.1 brings enterprise-grade cloud computing to the open source communities of the world and sets the stage for a true architecture of participation. This release draws from production experience with customers such as Puma, Inter-Continental Hotels Group, NIST, NASA, Cornell University and others. Highly available, thoroughly tested, and with its industry-standard AWS API, Eucalyptus 3.1 is the leading open choice for on-premise and hybrid clouds."

The complete source code for Eucalyptus 3.1 will be publicly available on Github. All new development activity will also happen on Github. Defect and feature tracking will be publicly available too so that any member of the Eucalyptus community can file a bug report, request a feature, or simply keep track of the progress of the latest release.

Eucalyptus has never been particularly easy to install or configure. The new version will include a capability called FastStart that's supposed to make it possible to deploy on-premise AWS-compatible IaaS clouds in under 20 minutes.

FastStart can be deployed on CentOS 5 with Xen or CentOS 6 with KVM. Users will be able to install euStore images to experience their first cloud usage on their own infrastructure. A suite of installation tools called SilverEye will install and configure more complex Eucalyptus deployments.

Eucalyptus 3.1 will offer enterprise on-premise cloud deployments on the latest version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux with EC2, EBS, S3 and IAM using Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and VMware virtualization platforms.

Gartner says, "Hybrid cloud computing is the next phase of enterprise cloud adoption; however, one of the most challenging aspects of this approach is having the solutions in place to quickly deploy and manage the implementation."

The new features will be available on June 27 and include Amazon Web Services API extensions, Elastic Block Storage (EBS) improvements, expanded support for Windows images, a re-designed administrative console and improved command-line administrative tools.

There are no new Amazon APIs in 3.1 but the roadmap calls for Eucalyptus to add Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) and Auto Scaling next. The alliance with Amazon is reportedly bringing Eucalyptus into government agencies that need to keep data on-premise.
