Explaining Cloud Services in Layman’s Terms

Do you know what true scalability means - or how RAID 10 can affect your data backup solutions?

Everywhere you look, smart IT companies all over the world are touting Cloud Computing as the future of the IT industry. But here is the thing, for all the hotness of the term, what does Cloud even mean?

The term is somewhat amorphous. It has multiple meanings to different people. For one person, the Cloud might mean the process of virtualizing all of the services needed to run an office. For someone else, the Cloud means syncing their iPad with their Macbook Pro and iPod via iCloud. For someone else, the Cloud might mean saving and sharing their files via Dropbox. For a fourth person, the Cloud means a private infrastructure held securely within an IT Integrators datacenter full with dedicated firewalls and add-on’s such as dotDefender. The truth of the matter is the Cloud is all these things and more.

Recently, we have been seeing ads like this. It’s a pretty ad but it really does not say a damn thing, at least not to the general public. Sure, people in the IT industry know what the ad is getting at but if we were to ask  average Joe Smith what the Cloud is after watching that ad, he wouldn’t know what to say or where to begin. “Scalability? Verizon says their Cloud is scalable as far as the eye can see. That’s nice. What does it mean?” Point in case, Microsoft Word (M.W.) 2010 underlines scalability and scalable with red ink (i.e. M.W. thinks they are spelled wrong). If our common M.W. processing lexicon doesn’t recognize common Cloud terms, why should Joe Smith even know them?

My point being, the IT industry is selling a service – a service which most CEOs or COOs don’t understand because their business is restaurant management or international cargo shipping or marketing a tier three university sports team, not anything IT based. However, even if CEO Joe Smith doesn’t know it, he needs the Cloud to cut down on overhead and to make his business run smoother. Due to this, we think part of our mission should be explaining to Joe Smith what our services are in laymen’s terms which the general public can understand. We believe this because we know Cloud is a pretty term but it doesn’t mean anything without proper context.

So, to give you some proper context, we proudly present you with a video of FortressITX CEO Jason Silverglate explaining what the Cloud actually is, in English. We are doing this because we don’t believe a pretty ad does anything for you or for us. We believe it’s better that average Joe Smith knows what the Cloud is, knows what true scalability means and knows how RAID 10 can affect your data backup solutions. We believe this because the more you know about the Cloud, as a business owner and private citizen, the better off you will be. And now, Mr. Silverglate has a casual conversation explaining… What is the Cloud?

In the coming weeks and months to come, look to this space for a running series of IT information sessions. Consider them PSA’s, ITPSA’s. If you want to learn everything there is to know about Cloud, IT Integration and the future of the IT industry, this space is paramount to your daily life.
