Maritz Reportedly No Longer CEO of VMware

According to CRN, he has been replaced by EMC COO and Intel veteran Pat Gelsinger

Paul Maritz, the one-time high-ranking Microsoftee who has been CEO of VMware for the last four years, is out of a job, according to CRN, replaced by EMC COO and Intel veteran Pat Gelsinger.

Nobody’s sure if Maritz is staying or going. Gelsinger has been bruited as a possible replacement for EMC CEO Joe Tucci when he finally retires but now it’s speculated that Maritz could replace Tucci.

Back when Bill Gates was still running Microsoft, Maritz was said to be the third most powerful executive there after Steve Ballmer.

GigaOm is also running a story saying VMware, a subsidiary of EMC, is considering spinning out its open source, increasingly cloud-neutral Cloud Foundry Platform-as-a-Service as a separate EMC subsidiary along with EMC’s Greenplum Hadoop/Big Data business and the nascent VMware- EMC Infrastructure-as-a-Service joint venture Project Rubicon.

It thinks that Tod Nielsen, co-president of VMware’s application platform business, or Mark Lucovsky, VP of engineering in charge of Cloud Foundry, could be put in charge on the spin-out, aimed at building a cloud computing services company to compete with Google, Microsoft and Amazon.

GigaOm waded in after the CRN story broke saying there were rumors Maritz had been offered the chairmanship of Cloud Foundry. It also suggested there are substantive reasons why Maritz may be out.

It said, “If Maritz is indeed out at the company after four years at the helm, it may be because VMware has let its lead on virtualization – its core business – slide while pursuing enterprise applications and higher-level software…. Instead of buying things like Zimbra from Yahoo, VMware needed to keep its eye on the management of scaled-out enterprise infrastructure, focusing on building software to monitor and manage multiple cloud environments and span hybrid clouds.”

Last week EMC said its vice-chairman Bill Teuber would get responsibility for strategy and business development in emerging markets while Bill Scannell replaces him as president of global sales and customer operations.

Poor data quality and analytics drive down business value. In fact, Gartner estimated that the average financial impact of poor data quality on organizations is $9.7 million per year. But bad data is much more than a cost center. By eroding trust in information, analytics and the business decisions based on these, it is a serious impediment to digital transformation.

Digital Transformation: Preparing Cloud & IoT Security for the Age of Artificial Intelligence. As automation and artificial intelligence (AI) power solution development and delivery, many businesses need to build backend cloud capabilities. Well-poised organizations, marketing smart devices with AI and BlockChain capabilities prepare to refine compliance and regulatory capabilities in 2018. Volumes of health, financial, technical and privacy data, along with tightening compliance requirements by FTC, CUI/DFARS, EU-GDPR and the underlying National Cybersecurity Framework suggest the need for a ground-up re-thinking of security strategies and compliance actions. This session offers actionable advice based on case studies to demonstrate the impact of security and privacy attributes for the cloud-backed IoT and AI ecosystem.
Everyone wants the rainbow - reduced IT costs, scalability, continuity, flexibility, manageability, and innovation. But in order to get to that collaboration rainbow, you need the cloud! In this presentation, we'll cover three areas: First - the rainbow of benefits from cloud collaboration. There are many different reasons why more and more companies and institutions are moving to the cloud. Benefits include: cost savings (reducing on-prem infrastructure, reducing data center foot print, reducing IT support costs), enabling growth (ensuring a highly available, highly scalable infrastructure), increasing employee access & engagement (by having collaboration tools that are usable and available globally regardless of location there will be an increased connectedness amongst teams and individuals that will help increase both efficiency and productivity.)
Excitement and interest in APIs has skyrocketed in recent years. However, if you ask a room full of IT professionals "What is an API", you will get a wide array of answers. There exists a wide knowledge gap between API experts and those that have a general idea of what they are, but are unsure of what they have been for in the past, what they look like now, and how they can be used to expand your business in the future. In this session John will cover what the history of APIs, what an API looks like now, how APIs are used today, and why they are important to your entire organization and digital transformation. John will also cover how you can use APIs to lead your digital transformation and uncover new business opportunities within your organization.
