Ways Cloud Services Are Changing the Game

Enterprise Cloud News

Obtaining computing power from somewhere other than a privately owned data center or on-site room of servers is an increasingly big business. Gartner Research has predicted that, for the first time, the worldwide IT outsourcing market will surpass a whopping $250 billion in 2012, according to an article by eWEEK's Chris Preimesberger.

IT platforms available through cloud services are an important factor in this growth.

"The fastest-growing segment within the worldwide ITO market is cloud compute services, which is part of the cloud-based infrastructure as a service (IaaS) segment. Cloud compute services are expected to grow 48.7 percent in 2012 to $5 billion, up from $3.4 billion in 2011," Gartner wrote.

For startups in particular, subscribing to cloud IT services has never made more sense, in terms of capital expense, security and operational logistics. eWEEK offers this slideshow of key data points on why cloud computing is impacting the IT outsourcing business.

Rackspace Releases Its OpenStack Private Cloud Software for Free
Rackspace's Private Cloud Software, available now, provides a free download of the same complete version of Essex OpenStack that the company runs in its own hosted private clouds.

Rackspace is looking to entice cloud-curious companies to have a closer look at OpenStack at their leisure and on their own equipment, with the hopes of getting them to sign up for Rackspace's support services, according to a recent article on InfoWorld.

The Rackspace Private Cloud Software, code-named Alamo, comprises Rackspace's Chef-configured version of OpenStack, which is 100 percent open source Essex. A new version of OpenStack, dubbed Folsom, is expected in September.

"We are working with partners like Red Hat and others to offer our customers a choice of host operating systems and OpenStack distributions in the future," Rackspace said in a statement.

With the release, the company is offering its Escalation Support services, which include 24/7 ticket and phone support. The company will continue to add more services, such as cloud monitoring, later this year.

Ways Cloud Will Impact IT Employment
There's some concern about the fate of IT jobs as cloud computing takes hold. At one extreme, some analysts predict much of IT will move outside the organization, according to an article on ZDNet.

But maybe cloud means more opportunities than it takes away.

Evolven's Syed Raza and Martin Perlin did a fine job pulling together the top ways cloud computing is changing IT employment opportunities. Pulling information and analysis from various sites, Raza and Perlin paint of picture of great opportunity, not decline, for IT as clouds become the de facto form of enterprise computing.

Here are ZDNet's nine of the top impacts on IT employment from cloud.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next-gen applications and how to address the challenges of building applications that harness all data types and sources.
