Ping Identity Gains Cloud Visibility With Boundary and Puppet Labs

Real-Time App Performance Analysis by Boundary and Configuration Management by Puppet Labs Help Ping Identity Manage Its Apps in the Cloud

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/08/12 -- Ping Identity, The Cloud Identity Security Leader™, has selected monitoring software from Boundary and IT automation software from Puppet Labs to scale its applications reliably on Amazon's public cloud service and on its own private network. More than 800 of the world's largest companies, government organizations and cloud businesses use Ping Identity to deliver secure cloud identity management through single sign-on, federated identity management, mobile identity security, API security, social media integration and centralized access control.

While testing the scalability of one of its hosted applications, Ping Identity deployed Boundary in its testing environment. The analysis showed several areas for performance optimization. Puppet was used to automate configuration management tasks across the Ping Identity environment and deploy Boundary to three data centers. When Puppet completes configuration tasks, often several times a day, those updates appear in the Boundary dashboard so that IT managers can track any potential application performance issues arising from those changes.

Together, Puppet Labs and Boundary deliver Ping Identity comprehensive, real-time visibility and better control over its dynamically-changing environment. The IT automation and application monitoring systems help prevent performance issues for customers and allow the security application company to operate more efficiently. Puppet also automates the deployment of Boundary, so that Ping could quickly scale out Boundary across its hybrid cloud environment.

"Previously, we didn't have views into the Amazon network at all or into certain parts of our own network, and in my view that's really a requirement for us to confidently scale our applications in the public cloud," said Beau Christensen, Lead Site Reliability Engineer at Ping Identity. "Boundary and Puppet provides us the real-time network information and configuration capabilities we need."

Unlike traditional IT monitoring tools that assume a fixed infrastructure, Boundary is ideal for dynamic environments that experience change on a massive and continuous scale including public and private clouds, fixed networks, data centers, highly-agile application development environments, SQL or NoSQL clusters and Big Data application stacks.

Today, Boundary is delivering a comprehensive dashboard across the Ping Identity application infrastructure, including monitoring traffic between three data centers. Boundary has helped the company improve application scalability and reduce bottlenecks on its networks, improve the distribution of traffic across its servers, and model network traffic to prepare financially for adding a new data center in the coming months.

Broadly, Boundary helps Ping Identity estimate where it needs to grow the infrastructure to add value for customers and where it can decrease or adapt resources to save money. "It's really important for us to see where our customers are coming from so that we can scale resources properly," Christensen says.

"Boundary's integration with Puppet gives IT managers real-time visibility into infrastructure changes that might impact application performance in dynamic, hybrid cloud environments," said Teyo Tyree, VP of Business Development at Puppet Labs. "With our free Boundary module available on the Puppet Forge, system administrators can reliably automate the installation and management of Boundary and synchronize Puppet tags to Boundary meters."

"It's exciting to work with both Ping Identity and Puppet Labs on this deployment, because it further demonstrates our ability to reduce risk in the public cloud," said Gary Read, CEO at Boundary. "Many companies worry about relying upon a provider such as Amazon, because they fear the lack of control and visibility into performance. Boundary can help any company confidently move its critical applications to a public cloud service, while still maintaining the reliability and service levels customers expect."

Cloud Expo Breaking News
The rise of cloud computing has exposed hard drive-based storage as the new data center bottleneck. Combating this, data center managers have deployed SSDs to gain the performance needed to provide real-time access to data. However, due to budget constraints, many have turned to consumer-grade SSDs without understanding that they wear out quickly when processing enterprise workloads. In this session, Esther Spanjer will discuss recent endurance advancements in SSD technology that enable usage of...
