Hutchison 3G Austria Selects Sonus Session Border Controllers To Improve Network Quality of Service and Aid Future Capability

Sonus Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: SONS), a global leader in SIP communications, today announced that Hutchison 3G Austria (H3G), the first mobile multimedia operator in Austria, has selected the Sonus SBC 5000 series of session border controllers (SBCs) as the SIP interconnect platform from their mobile core network. As the enabling technology of SIP, Sonus SBCs will help H3G to deliver an improved quality of service to its growing base of 1.4 million subscribers by enhancing network reliability and security while providing a foundation to deploy future SIP-based applications and services.

H3G selected the Sonus Session Border Controller 5200 and Sonus Session Border Controller 5100 following a rigorous competitive proof of concept. H3G’s selection of Sonus marks the beginning of a new relationship between the two companies.

The Sonus SBC 5000 series combines security, media switching and transcoding services in a single scalable device, and is designed to provide an intelligent interconnection between H3G and their partner networks. The Sonus SBC 5100 delivers 250 to 10,000 sessions and the Sonus SBC 5200 supports up to 64,000 sessions on a single server. H3G selected Sonus to secure the network border, enforce quality of service policies, traverse intermediate network address translation (NAT) and firewalls, ensure regulatory compliance, deliver the essential transcoding of media and provide codec, dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) and fax interworking. The Sonus SBC portfolio is the fastest growing on the market and the Sonus SBC 5200 has more than twice the capacity of the leading competitor.

Quotes:

“Our business is growing at a tremendous rate and we needed a solution that we could be confident would be able to scale as we need it, without compromising on performance,” said Rico Chemnitz, head of IT core network at H3G Austria. “The proof of concept proved that Sonus’ SBCs more than exceeded our near-term requirements, as well as providing us with a platform to deliver new SIP-based capabilities in the future. We see Sonus as a valuable partner to our future growth.”

“H3G’s selection of Sonus solutions underlines the increasing understanding that significant businesses in EMEA, like H3G, have that the future lies in SIP,” said Serge Adam, vice president EMEA at Sonus. “The Sonus SBC 5000 series is designed to deliver the next-generation needs of SIP communications by delivering interworking, embedded media transcoding, robust security and advanced call routing in a high-performance, small form-factor device.”
