24% Of IT Pros Say Business Units Spending More On Technology Without IT Input, New InformationWeek Reports Research Finds

29% cite SaaS as top area of biz unit spend; 19% of units have pot of tech money with no IT oversight.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Tech's InformationWeek Reports, a service provider for peer-based IT research and analysis, announced the release of its latest research report. Rising Spending, Stagnant Strategies encompasses analysis of results from InformationWeek's recent 2013 IT Budget Survey and guides readers in overcoming new budget challenges. More than 350 business technology professionals, all involved in approving, defining, managing or providing input into their organization's IT budgets, responded to this poll.

Research Summary:

Many IT teams are getting budgetary pressure from multiple sides: Lines of business want money for pet IT projects, CFOs want to reduce spending across the board, and the fast pace of change makes long-term planning incredibly difficult.

Findings:

  • 50% of our survey respondents say 20% or more of their IT operations are outsourced, up from 34% in 2010.
  • 28% expect their next fiscal year IT budgets to rise by 5% or more vs. 18% who anticipate some decrease.
  • 18% completely agree that as demand for IT services increases, their organizations will resource IT sufficiently to accomplish business objectives.
  • 6% keep a "slush fund" or overestimate some costs to cover unforeseen expenses.

The report author, Jonathan Feldman, serves as IT manager for a fast-growing city in North Carolina.

"CIOs shouldn't be afraid of transparency," says Lorna Garey, content director of InformationWeek Reports. "For example, about half of our respondents do 'show backs' to business units to show how much is spent on their behalf. Managers might not be in such a hurry to get control of IT funds if they realized what's involved in delivering a business service."
