Cardinal Logistics Management Transports Dry Ice to Save Years of Medical Research at NYU

CONCORD, N.C., Nov. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Cardinal Logistics Management Corporation, a leading provider of third-party transportation management and dedicated delivery services, assisted with the vital transportation of dry ice to NYU Langone Medical Center, hoping to preserve years of medical research from becoming a complete loss.

Shortly after Hurricane Sandy came onshore, NYU Langone Medical Center, one of the nation's premier centers of excellence in healthcare, biomedical research, and medical education, lost power. Backup generators failed leaving the abundance of refrigerated and frozen lab specimens in jeopardy. Years of heart disease, cancer and other disease research were put at risk of becoming a total loss. Due to the amount of time and resources spent studying and testing these cells, tissues and animals, the loss of this research would be a significant setback for NYU's research programs as well as the entire medical community.

To save the hospital's research specimens, Cardinal desperately needed to deliver 30,000 pounds of dry ice to NYU. The route from Baltimore, MD, to Manhattan in a 53 foot trailer carrying the crucial cargo was not an easy trek due to flooding, road closures, power outages and debris. Cardinal's Operation Manager, Dan Delabo, put together a strategic plan to pick up the temperature-sensitive shipment of dry ice and move it to its destination before any harm was done to the research. Given the importance of the delivery and with obstacles left by Hurricane Sandy presenting safety hazards for Cardinal's team and others, Delabo and his driver made the delivery as a team with a police escort. The delivery was a success with the Cardinal team arriving safely and the dry ice arriving in time to preserve the critical tissue samples.

"With weather conditions and transportation mobility at its worst, we were pleased to be able to provide aid for this imperative delivery to NYU Langone Medical Center," said Vin McLoughlin, Chairman at Cardinal Logistics Management. "Cardinal is committed to assisting our customers in the Northeast with their relief efforts. We want to do our part to get the storm stricken areas back on their feet."
