Actuate’s Jason Weathersby to Present “BIRT and Big Data” as a Featured Speaker During Eclipse Day at the Googleplex

Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ: BIRT), The BIRT Company™ – delivering more insights to more people than all BI companies combined – today announced that Jason Weathersby, Director of Evangelism and Community Development at Actuate, will present at the Eclipse Big Data Day event at the Googleplex on December 12, 2012. “Eclipse Day at the Googleplex” is a one-day event for developers to learn about different Eclipse projects and related technologies.

Mr. Weathersby has been a member of the extended BIRT development team at Actuate for more than 8 years, is a frequent technical speaker at international industry events and webinars, and has many years’ experience in business intelligence tools, database technologies, data visualization and related technical consulting, training and publishing. He earned a B.S. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at University of South Carolina, Columbia, and blogs at www.birtworld.blogspot.com and http://jasonweathersby.sys-con.com/latest/blogs.

Just as Big Data sources and distributed systems are more prevalent today; presenting results in meaningful ways is more cumbersome. BIRT – a set of developer tools co-developed and sponsored by Actuate as a top-level project within the Eclipse Foundation – can ease visualization of results in a user friendly way. BIRT provides native support to access Hadoop through Hive queries as well as connectors to other Big Data sources such as Cassandra and MongoDB.

Using BIRT, developers can display their internal or external clients’ data in a stylized tabular or graphical nature, and customize it using the BIRT Designer environment. These reports can include dynamic drill through and interactivity, and can be exported to various formats including PDF, HTML, XLS, and ODT.

Mr. Weathersby’s session will introduce developers to BIRT and will cover in detail how to retrieve and visualize data from Big Data sources such as Hive/Hadoop, Cassandra and Mongo DB.

By 2021, 500 million sensors are set to be deployed worldwide, nearly 40x as many as exist today. In order to scale fast and keep pace with industry growth, the team at Unacast turned to the public cloud to build the world's largest location data platform with optimal scalability, minimal DevOps, and maximum flexibility. Drawing from his experience with the Google Cloud Platform, VP of Engineering Andreas Heim will speak to the architecture of Unacast's platform and developer-focused processes.
The deluge of IoT sensor data collected from connected devices and the powerful AI required to make that data actionable are giving rise to a hybrid ecosystem in which cloud, on-prem and edge processes become interweaved. Attendees will learn how emerging composable infrastructure solutions deliver the adaptive architecture needed to manage this new data reality. Machine learning algorithms can better anticipate data storms and automate resources to support surges, including fully scalable GPU-centric compute for the most data-intensive applications. Hyperconverged systems already in place can be revitalized with vendor-agnostic, PCIe-deployed, disaggregated approach to composable, maximizing the value of previous investments.
The vast majority of businesses now use cloud services, yet many still struggle with realizing the full potential of their IT investments. In particular, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) lack the internal IT staff and expertise to fully move to and manage workloads in public cloud environments. Speaker Todd Schwartz will help session attendees better navigate the complex cloud market and maximize their technical investments. The SkyKick co-founder and co-CEO will share the biggest challenges uncovered by the company's [2017 survey](https://offers.skykick.com/top-cloud-challenges) of North American business, sales and IT leaders.
When applications are hosted on servers, they produce immense quantities of logging data. Quality engineers should verify that apps are producing log data that is existent, correct, consumable, and complete. Otherwise, apps in production are not easily monitored, have issues that are difficult to detect, and cannot be corrected quickly. Tom Chavez presents the four steps that quality engineers should include in every test plan for apps that produce log output or other machine data. Learn the steps so your team's apps not only function but also can be monitored and understood from their machine data when running in production.
With more than 30 Kubernetes solutions in the marketplace, it's tempting to think Kubernetes and the vendor ecosystem has solved the problem of operationalizing containers at scale or of automatically managing the elasticity of the underlying infrastructure that these solutions need to be truly scalable. Far from it. There are at least six major pain points that companies experience when they try to deploy and run Kubernetes in their complex environments. In this presentation, the speaker will detail these pain points and explain how cloud can address them.
