Getting Started with Porticor for IBM PureSystems

This article will walk you through the steps required to deploy a new Porticor VM in IBM PureSystems.

First, a word about prerequisites.

  • For production, we recommend to allocate the VM 4GB of memory. For testing (except for performance benchmarking), 1GB should be sufficient.
  • Make sure the VM is created on a network where it has outbound Internet connectivity. This is required so that the VM can connect to the Porticor Virtual Key Management service.

Ready to go? Here are the deployment steps:

  1. Download the Porticor virtual application for IBM PureSystems, (Please contact us for the Porticor for IBM PureSystems image).
  2. Use the IBM PureSystems web interface to deploy the Porticor application.
  3. Ensure that the Porticor Virtual Appliance is deployed with a local network address (either a static address from the IP pool or using DHCP). It is sometimes convenient for the address to persist across reboots, but it’s not a requirement, because of the persistent DNS address that we assign to the Porticor Virtual appliance during deployment.
  4. Once the VM has been created, start it, wait until you can see its IP address and then access the URL: https://VM-address/ (note the use of HTTPS, and change the URL for the IP address of the newly created Porticor Virtual Appliance).
  5. You are now redirected to the Porticor management application at pvkm.porticor.com, see screenshot below.

  • If you are an existing Porticor customer, sign in using your Porticor credentials (the highlighted line at the top of the page); otherwise fill in the registration form here.
  • Follow the short wizard to activate your new Porticor Virtual Appliance.

When you have a working appliance, you’d probably want to set up an encrypted disk:

  • Create a new disk on the PureSystems console and attach it to the appliance.
  • Back on the appliance’s management GUI, press “Rescan Disk Volumes”. You should see the new disk.
  • Use the GUI to expose the disk to your application, as iSCSI, NFS or a Windows share.

One of the cloud’s biggest draws is the capability to virtualize computing resources, allowing it to be consumed with the click of a mouse. But behind that simple click is an enormous infrastructure challenge that has recently been cited as a major cause for slower enterprise adoption. Enterprises can better prepare for this shift and take full advantage of future computing benefits. Between architecture design and migration planning, the road can be long, so what do you do with your talent? I...
In the old world of IT, if you didn't have hardware capacity or the budget to buy more, your project was dead in the water. Budget constraints can leave some of the best, most creative and most ingenious innovations on the cutting room floor. It’s a true dilemma for developers and innovators – why spend the time creating, when a project could be abandoned in a blink? That was the old world. In the new world of IT, developers rule. They have access to resources they can spin up instantly. A hyb...
