Nuix Unstructured Data Indexing Engine Receives U.S. Patent Office Recognition of Its Unique Parallel Processing Capabilities

Nuix, the Australian provider of information management technologies, is due to be issued a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on core features of the Nuix unstructured data indexing engine, with additional patents pending. Nuix’s unique parallel-processing approach to unstructured data has underpinned its rapid growth and success in the eDiscovery, investigation and information governance markets.

“Nuix can index unstructured data faster than any other application on the market because it was designed from the outset for parallel processing,” said Eddie Sheehy, CEO of Nuix.

Approximately 80% of the data organisations store is unstructured—including email, other communications, documents and images. The highly complex systems that organisations use to store the largest volumes of unstructured data often have poor search and management capabilities—their contents are increasingly becoming “dark data.”

“Without Nuix’s massively parallel processing technologies, organisations will find it extremely difficult to gain insights into enormous unstructured data sets quickly and thoroughly enough to achieve tangible, defensible business benefits,” said Sheehy.

The patent describes a unique combination of load balancing, fault tolerance and intelligent processing technologies that enable Nuix to index vast quantities of unstructured data with forensic precision, even in complex storage repositories such as archives and compliance storage. These technologies maximise processing speed and scalability on a small hardware footprint, enabling rapid deployment of on-premise solutions.

Current customer use cases include:

  • Deleting redundant, obsolete and trivial data from most storage platforms
  • Intelligently migrating only valuable data to new platforms or the cloud
  • Identifying and dealing with risky data such as personally identifiable information (PII), credit card data (PCI) and personal health information (PHI)
  • Locating and managing company records and contracts that are not stored or secured appropriately
  • Conducting rapid, thorough eDiscovery and investigation on the most relevant data
  • Automating searches to highlight breaches of company policies
  • Enabling employees to search all their own data, organisation-wide
  • Combining searches over structured and unstructured data to understand what happened and why
  • Unlocking value by mining unstructured data for business insights and intelligence.

“The practical outcome of our parallel processing approach is customers start to see results within hours,” said Sheehy. “They can complete in days or weeks tasks they previous thought impossible.”
