PernixData Introduces the Industry's First Software-Defined, Server-side, Scale-out Data Tier, Becomes the VMware of Server Flash

Oracle Exadata co-founder and VMware Storage CTO team up to bring scale-out storage to every virtualized data center.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- PernixData exited stealth mode today to introduce its software-defined Flash Virtualization Platform (FVP) that virtualizes server-side flash into a scale-out data tier for enterprise data centers. Designed to address virtualization's ever increasing storage performance requirements, PernixData's FVP is the first product that enables organizations to use server-side flash storage in a seamless manner.

"In recent times there have been efforts to bring data closer to compute. I was involved in one such proprietary hardware-based effort when I co-founded Oracle Exadata. PernixData, on the other hand, is bringing data closer to compute via a transparent software platform that seamlessly integrates server flash with virtualization," said Poojan Kumar, CEO and co-founder of PernixData. "We have built an enterprise class, server-side, scale-out flash virtualization platform completely in software, which provides orders of magnitude more storage performance without making any changes to virtual machines or existing storage systems. PernixData has done for server flash what VMware did for CPU and memory."

"Virtualization and server flash are made for each other, but there is no way today to bring the two together without breaking critical virtualization features," said Satyam Vaghani, CTO and co-founder of PernixData. "At PernixData we have built a platform that allows users to leverage server flash seamlessly as a clustered resource in virtualized environments. For the first time, users can now deploy a server-side, scale-out tier for data in motion while leveraging any existing storage system for data at rest. We essentially bring scale-out storage to everyone."

"PernixData's product marks the emergence of a strategic new data tier for today's virtualized infrastructure," said Mark Leslie, CEO and co-founder of Veritas Software and early VMware board member. "The potential impact of such disruption reminds me of VMware's early accomplishments."

"PernixData brings together the rare combination of a top team and a game changing technology," said Bipul Sinha, partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners. "The channel partners will love the economics of a truly frictionless software-defined storage platform."

PernixData is working with a select number of companies as part of its early access program. If you are looking to make a strategic change to the design of your virtualized data center please visit www.pernixdata.com to join PernixData's Early Access Program. PernixData plans to have its software more generally available in Q2 2013.

About PernixData

PernixData is the provider of a Flash Virtualization Platform (FVP) that enables enterprises to overcome storage and performance barriers that limit the penetration of virtualization within the data center. The company was established in February 2012 by Poojan Kumar, a co-founder of Oracle Exadata, and Satyam Vaghani, VMware's Storage CTO, creator of VMware's clustered file system (VMFS), and architect of several storage-related innovations at VMware over the last decade. PernixData raised an over-subscribed round of Series A financing in 2012, which was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners' Bipul Sinha. Mark Leslie, Founder & CEO of Veritas and former VMware board member is an investor and current board member of PernixData. In addition, PernixData is backed by industry luminaries such as John Thompson, ex-CEO of Symantec and Microsoft board member, and Lane Bess, ex-CEO of Palo Alto Networks.

As enterprises deploy private IaaS clouds into production they are reevaluating their future application delivery models. SUSE and WSO2 believe that private PaaS will leverage the automation and scalability of Private IaaS solutions, such as OpenStack-based SUSE Cloud, to deliver the secure, standardized development environments that will make migrating to an agile, serviceoriented delivery model possible. In their session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Chris Haddad, VP of Technology Ev...
“Trust is an ongoing journey and sits at the foundation of any vendor relationship – the companies that don’t consistently earn trust won’t be around long,” noted Henrik Rosendahl, Senior VP of Cloud Solutions at Quantum, in this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. “As they do more with cloud, trust will organically grow – maybe it’s just about meeting SLAs or seeing firsthand that data is there when you need it,” Rosendahl continued. If zettabytes of data exist, why is less than 1% of the world’s data being analyzed today? Seasoned entrepreneur and startup CEO Radhika Subramanian believes that the inability to analyze and gain value from Big Data is that organizations are taking a services-centered approach. As the title of the session implies, Subramanian believes that the data needs to do the talking, not armies of analysts searching and querying databases. Her company has developed high-speed, advanced algorithms to autom...
Our more interconnected planet is accelerating the adoption and convergence of next-generation architectures, in the form of cloud, mobile and instrumented physical assets. Organizations that can effectively balance optimization and innovation, will be in a position to leverage new systems of engagement, out maneuver their peers and achieve desired outcomes. Cloud enables SMBs to access new, scalable resources – previously only available to enterprises – in flexible and cost-effective ways. McKinsey’s SMB Cloud Report projects the public cloud market to reach $40-$50 billion by 2015, with SMBs comprising 65% of public cloud spending in 2015. But selling cloud to SMBs raises the questions of who, what and how. In this session Manjula Talreja, VP of Cisco’s Global Cloud Business Development Team, will discuss the importance of knowing who SMB...
