Pertino Raises $20 Million

The company means to use the new money to execute against its SDN cloud platform vision and build out its go-to-market strategy

Pertino, the start-up that figures its software-defined WANs can reinvent cloud-era networking for the masses, has raised $20 million in B series funding led by new investor Jafco Ventures with existing investors Norwest Venture Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners kicking in.

The new round brings Pertino's total VC take to $28.85 million and may take it through to break-even.

The company means to use the new money to execute against its SDN cloud platform vision and build out its go-to-market strategy.

Pertino's widgetry has been in limited availability since its launch last month. Jafco thinks Pertino, which is focused on SMBs, is delivering a disruptive technology in a practical and consumable way to an underserved global market.

The start-up's cloud network engine is supposed to let businesses of any size build a secure cloud-based network in minutes with no hardware, expertise or upfront investment, enabling employees to connect to IT resources from anywhere in the world as easily as they do in the office.

CEO Craig Elliott observed that "SMBs comprise almost half of IT spending worldwide, yet a significant number of them struggle with having the resources to deploy new technology and applications. By leveraging the cloud and SDN technology to radically simplify networking, Pertino is poised to unlock a massive opportunity and Jafco's SMB and business development experience in Asia will help us realize it."

The company's beta reportedly resulted in over 250 customers deploying and testing their own Pertino cloud network. Since then, the company says the number of deployed customers has grown to over 700.

Now available worldwide, Pertino lets customers build a free network for up to three people with three devices each, and then pay only $10 per member per month as they grow.

The start-up says it looked to Netflix' best practices in massive scaling. As it goes to market it will be adding capabilities such as security, authentication and optimization as well as expanding its platform support to XP, Mac, Android and iOS by the end of the year. It will build, partner or acquire the technology.

It expects to create demand globally and partner with MSPs.
