AppMesh Moves into Big Hole Salesforce Overlooked

It claims to have what it calls a “post-cloud architecture”

AppMesh, a year-old start-up begun by Salesforce veterans, says it's the first mobile-only CRM app built for sales reps.

The company has no interest in managers - well, at least not yet - only the under-served sales pro.

AppMesh claims to have what it calls a "post-cloud architecture," an eye-catching way of saying the user can sync data across mobile devices using whatever connectivity's available but stores all of the info on the device itself, no cloud needed.

Anyway, the widgetry integrates contextual awareness into core phone, calendar and e-mail applications for a unified always-available view of customer data and interactions. In other word, it'll set user priorities.

The application logs interactions without manual entry and geotags each interaction for simplicity and accuracy. Cool, huh.

AppMesh figures it's modernizing customer engagement and letting sales reps spend less time maintaining contact databases, transcribing notes and syncing devices to PC-based data and more time closing deals.

The widgetry works on iOS and is particularly targeting the iPad, the tablet popular with the enterprise. It's available on iTunes now for free for up to five people.

AppMesh says nobody has exploited the tablet - or the smartphone for that matter - as a platform for tracking customer engagements. And it's way more efficient than the using the antiquated CRM tools now available to the mobile sales force.

According to co-founder and CEO Leo Tenenblat, "We created AppMesh to solve everyday challenges like manual data entry and losing touch with customers when information is spread across disparate apps and devices. AppMesh is aimed at transforming customer engagement within today's post-PC and post-cloud business models. We empower salespeople to work smarter and get more done without having to put in more hours."

"Once forced to rely on cross-referencing individual databases of information across several devices and applications to ensure accuracy, salespeople can now leverage the AppMesh application to avoid such inefficiency and unproductive downtime."

The company got a not-quite million-dollar seed round from a couple of shy VCs and some angels.

It expects to move on to managers and teams this year and Android next year. It also expects to always have a free tier.

Gartner reportedly estimates the current value of the marketplace at $14 billion.

Tenenblat was senior director of product management at Salesforce, where he drove the go-to-market strategy for the analytics product as well as external customer relationships and evangelism. Salesforce is all about CRM but not the way AppMesh is approaching it. At this point data can be downloaded from Salesforce to AppMesh but not the other way around.
