CIA Backs Apigee

The CIA and other spook agencies want to improve their data sharing and figure out what to do with information once they get it

In a discrete low-key press release API house Apigee said Thursday that it's getting backing from the CIA's strategic venture arm In-Q-Tel (IQT) to enhance its widgetry to support the US intelligence community.

No number was mentioned.

Apigee has already raised $72.1 million in five rounds that included SAP, the German company, four times.

The CIA and other spook agencies want to improve their data sharing and figure out what to do with information once they get it, especially since there's more information than ever before and Apigee is focused on mobile apps, which spew out information like an open fire hydrant during a hot summer in the projects.

It's supposed to glean the quality info.

The company said the investment will enable further development of its enterprise-grade API Platform, its flagship product, a cloud-based service that helps businesses deliver, manage and measure APIs and the applications built on them in real-time.

Apigee claims to reduce the complexity of delivering APIs and building apps, drive developer adoption, provide comprehensive analysis, control API use and help organizations scale as channels grow.

"The Apigee platform can support organizations at varying stages of their API initiatives, from building effective APIs to creating meaningful business intelligence from their app ecosystems," Robert Ames, senior ViP in charge of IQT's information and communication technologies practice, said in a statement. "We believe that our government customers will be able to benefit from this comprehensive set of capabilities."

Apigee claims hundreds of customers including Walgreens, Bechtel, eBay, Pearson and Gilt Groupe as well as tens of thousands of developers.

There is also talk in Computerworld about the CIA using Amazon, at least inside its firewalls, while making use of Amazon's sometimes troubled Virginia data center.
