Certifiably Cloud: AWS Announces Accreditation

Are you AWS certified?

Are you AWS certified?

Last week several reporters, including Gathering Clouds friend in the field Barb Darrow, analyzed Amazon’s recent announcement of its cloud certification program. Widely seen as a positive move for the company, the announcement does raise some questions.

As Barb Darrow notes:

Older tech companies — Microsoft, IBM, VMware, Cisco Systems — have long relied on certifications as a way for people — either those inside IT shops or at third-party VARs and integrators (and those seeking jobs in either camp) — to show that they have what it takes to succeed working with specific technologies.

While the practice of certification is well established, AWS’ announcement is of particular note, as it both solidifies the company from the perspective of it’s platform and tools becoming trainable skills (and therefore more applicable to enterprise standards of usage) and positions the service as becoming far more self-supporting (since it will require those specific trainable skills). If we thought AWS was a sticky service before (in terms of its proprietary functionalities, third party tool sets, and APIs, this move certainly makes that notion even clearer.

But does AWS certification mean that AWS thinks it will increasingly be the cloud vehicle companies increasingly look to ride? With mumblings of increased focus on BAAs at AWS, it would appear the organization believes that it can become dominant to that scale.

However, certifications and business agreements aside, the progression of cloud usage at the enterprise level is much more a patchwork approach than a single provider reliance model of 2 decades ago. If AWS is looking to be what IBM or Microsoft was/is then they have certainly planted a stake in the ground.

From the expertise perspective though, no sys-admin, developer, solutions architect, or network admin is simply going to be AWS certified. AWS certification will coexist with other learned skills within his or her wheelhouse of technical applicability – and this fact alone points to certain realities – namely that AWS while important and powerful, is part of a cloud strategy.
