O'Neal Steel Standardizes on Informatica Data Integration to Achieve Holistic View of Customer and Sales Operations

Informatica PowerCenter and PowerExchange Deliver Data in Real-Time for Nation's Largest Independent Metals Provider

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Informatica Corporation today announced that O'Neal Steel, Inc., the largest family-owned metals service center in the U.S., has standardized enterprise-wide on the Informatica PowerCenter data integration platform and PowerExchange data-access software to provide data in real-time to its strategic and operational decision makers. By using PowerCenter and PowerExchange to consolidate data across multiple subsidiaries and create unified dashboard views, O'Neal Steel will heighten management visibility into customers and field operations, streamline reporting, and accelerate its sales and product delivery cycles.

"Informatica will help us provide customers with exactly what they need, when they need it, by delivering business critical information in real time," said Mike Gooldrup, chief information officer of O'Neal Steel. "The alternatives we looked at were complicated, development-intensive and didn't really provide a complete solution for extracting and leveraging data from ERP and legacy mainframe applications. Informatica, on the other hand, provides the full range of data integration and delivery capabilities we require along with flexibility and ease of use. Key decision makers will have real-time access to the information they need to move decisively on business opportunities."

A full-line metals service company with products ranging from metal plate and structural shapes to tubing and pipe, family-owned O'Neal Steel has grown rapidly through acquisitions and now maintains more than 70 facilities across the United States. The company previously relied on a combination of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and a reporting tool embedded in its ERP system, which made retrieving data from its legacy mainframe systems difficult. Now, relevant mainframe data is transparently retrieved using Informatica's PowerExchange mainframe access software and integrated via PowerCenter with other enterprise data to create previously unobtainable holistic views of O'Neal Steel's operations.

The information integrated across its six subsidiaries will be consolidated so it can be used daily by the company's top management, including the chairman, regional vice presidents and business unit managers, to take in timely company-wide information at a glance, drill down to individual business units within regions, and easily view details on all customers, products, sales representatives and order types. PowerCenter will also enable the company to bring consistency to its delivered data with standard definitions and business rules across all its operating units.

"One of the biggest challenges facing fast-growing, geographically dispersed enterprises is data fragmentation, which stands in the way of the quick, informed decisions that help drive success," said Brian Gentile, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Informatica. "In standardizing on Informatica, O'Neal Steel can quickly access all enterprise information, regardless of where it resides, which is a key element of its corporate reengineering effort."

At CloudEXPO Silicon Valley, June 24-26, 2019, Digital Transformation (DX) is a major focus with expanded DevOpsSUMMIT and FinTechEXPO programs within the DXWorldEXPO agenda. Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation if they plan to survive over the long term. A total of 88% of Fortune 500 companies from a generation ago are now out of business. Only 12% still survive. Similar percentages are found throughout enterprises of all sizes.
When you're operating multiple services in production, building out forensics tools such as monitoring and observability becomes essential. Unfortunately, it is a real challenge balancing priorities between building new features and tools to help pinpoint root causes. Linkerd provides many of the tools you need to tame the chaos of operating microservices in a cloud native world. Because Linkerd is a transparent proxy that runs alongside your application, there are no code changes required. It even comes with Prometheus to store the metrics for you and pre-built Grafana dashboards to show exactly what is important for your services - success rate, latency, and throughput.

Modern software design has fundamentally changed how we manage applications, causing many to turn to containers as the new virtual machine for resource management. As container adoption grows beyond stateless applications to stateful workloads, the need for persistent storage is foundational - something customers routinely cite as a top pain point. In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 21st Cloud Expo, Bill Borsari, Head of Systems Engineering at Datera, explored how organizations can reap the benefits of the cloud without losing performance as containers become the new paradigm.
