OpenNebula 4.2 Beta Released

Multi-tier Cloud Application Orchestration and Auto-scaling

The OpenNebula Project has just announced the beta release of OpenNebula 4.2, the first update of the fourth series of its widely deployed OpenNebula cloud management platform, a fully open-source solution for data center management and enterprise cloud computing. With a sysadmin-centric approach, OpenNebula is the open operating system of choice in the converged data centre, combining a powerful virtualization manager that supports traditional IT features such as fault tolerance and failover, with the dynamic provisioning, elasticity and multi-tenancy of the enterprise cloud.

As usual OpenNebula releases are named after a Nebula. The Flame Nebula (catalogued as NGC 2024 and Sh2-277) is an emission nebula in the constellation Orion. It is located about 900 to 1,500 light-years away from Earth.

OpenNebula 4.2 gives users and administrators an easy way to create, publish, share, and manage multi-tier cloud applications and automatically define auto-scaling policies based on service level metrics and time schedule. The new service flow functionality converts an infrastructure cloud into a powerful environment for the execution of elastic business applications.

OpenNebula Flame also includes a more polished Sunstone interface, after its redesign in 4.0; with important usability enhancements. Datastore capacity is now monitored and used to limit the amount of storage size used by images. This is a first step to also control the runtime storage used by the VMs. The VMware backend has been completely redesigned with a more comprehensive storage scheme, more functionality and less dependencies. Also we have upgraded the Xen backend to support the new interfaces introduced in Xen 4.0. More details in its Release Notes.

OpenNebula 4.2 will be shown at OpenNebula Conference 2013, from 24 to 26 of September in Berlin. This first ever OpenNebula Conference will serve as a meeting point of cloud users, developers, administrators, builders, integrators and researchers, featuring talks with experiences and use cases from organizations like Produban – Bank Santander Group, China Mobile, FermiLab, Deutsche Post E-Post, European Space Agency, CentOS Project, Akamai, and BBC. The Conference agenda also includes a hands-on tutorial, lightning talks, and hacking and open space sessions that will provide an opportunity to present and discuss burning ideas, and meet face to face to discuss development.

Dr. Llorente is Director of the OpenNebula Project and CEO & co-founder at C12G Labs. He is an entrepreneur and researcher in the field of cloud and distributed computing, having managed several international projects and initiatives on Cloud Computing, and authored many articles in the leading journals and proceedings books. Dr. Llorente is one of the pioneers and world's leading authorities on Cloud Computing. He has held several appointments as independent expert and consultant for the European Commission and several companies and national governments. He has given many keynotes and invited talks in the main international events in cloud computing, has served on several Groups of Experts on Cloud Computing convened by international organizations, such as the European Commission and the World Economic Forum, and has contributed to several Cloud Computing panels and roadmaps. He founded and co-chaired the Open Grid Forum Working Group on Open Cloud Computing Interface, and has participated in the main European projects in Cloud Computing. Llorente holds a Ph.D in Computer Science (UCM) and an Executive MBA (IE Business School), and is a Full Professor (Catedratico) and the Head of the Distributed Systems Architecture Group at UCM.
