Coriant and ZTE Corporation Join the OpenDaylight Project

New Silver Members Join the Largest Open Source SDN and NFV Project to Advance Network Programmability

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 01/16/14 -- The OpenDaylight Project, a community-led and industry-supported open source platform to advance Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), announced that Coriant and ZTE Corporation have joined the project to accelerate the adoption of SDN and NFV. With support from 31 member organizations, the OpenDaylight developer community is bringing together technologies, ideas and code to deliver a common, open source platform for network programmability.

For enterprise and service providers to move their SDN and NFV strategies forward with confidence requires the existence of a common, widely supported platform. OpenDaylight represents the largest community of developers working collaboratively to develop an open platform with a consistent set of APIs, expected systemic behaviors and a rich ecosystem of applications and supporting technologies that increase interoperability and reduce risk of implementation and evolution. Because it is open source, OpenDaylight can be a core component within any SDN- and NFV-based architecture, and anyone can use, modify and contribute to the codebase.

"As NFV takes center stage, it's exciting to see organizations like Coriant and ZTE Corporation contribute to the development of an open source SDN and NFV platform with OpenDaylight," said Neela Jacques, executive director for OpenDaylight. "Working collaboratively is the right way to produce the code and the build architecture that can change the face of networking."

About the newest OpenDaylight Project members:

Coriant founded as an independent company in 2013, is a leading supplier of future-proof optical transport, packet/optical switching and aggregation, and software-defined service control and management solutions to Tier 1 service providers worldwide. Coriant's products and solutions enable fixed line and mobile network operators to reduce operational complexity, increase service velocity, and improve resource utilization as transport networks scale in response to a new generation of high-bandwidth services and applications. The company operates worldwide in more than 48 countries and is headquartered in Munich, Germany. Coriant has R&D centers in Asia, Germany, Portugal and the United States, as well as a state-of-the-art production center in Berlin, Germany. Learn more at www.coriant.com.

"SDN and NFV are changing the way networks are designed, built and operated. We believe a common, open platform like OpenDaylight will create an environment that enables operators to tap into new revenue opportunities by not only enabling new services, but also deploying them faster and more efficiently," said Uwe Fischer, CTO of Coriant. "OpenDaylight's open and collaborative development approach to solving SDN and NFV will generate an environment that simplifies multi-vendor interoperability and allow member companies like Coriant to provide a level of networking that previously didn't exist."

ZTE Corporation is a global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions. Headquartered in Shenzhen, China, ZTE has a strong presence in the United States, with several R&D centers and a local headquarters in Dallas, Texas. As one of the largest mobile phone and telecom equipment manufacturers, ZTE works closely with carriers such as AT&T, Cricket Communications, Metro PCS, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. The company's core products include wireless, exchange, access, optical transmission and data telecommunications gear and mobile phones.

"SDN and NFV have the potential to greatly transform the telecom industry by delivering a level of network flexibility and agility previously unavailable," said Cissy Yuan, Chief Architect and OpenDaylight PR with ZTE Corporation. "Industry wide collaboration on an open SDN and NFV platform with OpenDaylight will help us achieve this faster and allow carriers to more quickly innovate and roll out new services while preserving resources."

The first OpenDaylight Summit is being held February 4-5, 2014 in Santa Clara, Calif. This new conference unites enterprises, carriers and equipment providers to collaborate and learn about SDN and NFV. Attendees will also get a look into OpenDaylight's first code release, Hydrogen, as well as a glimpse at future releases. What are the new priorities for the connected business? First: businesses need to think differently about the types of connections they will need to make – these span well beyond the traditional app to app into more modern forms of integration including SaaS integrations, mobile integrations, APIs, device integration and Big Data integration. It’s important these are unified together vs. doing them all piecemeal. Second, these types of connections need to be simple to design, adapt and configure...

Just over a week ago I received a long and loud sustained applause for a presentation I delivered at this year’s Cloud Expo in Santa Clara. I was extremely pleased with the turnout and had some very good conversations with many of the attendees. Over the next few days I had many more meaningful conversations and was not only happy with the results but also learned a few new things. Here is everything I learned in those three days distilled into three short points.
The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, will compare the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, e...
Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...

Digital innovation is the next big wave of business transformation based on digital technologies of which IoT and Big Data are key components, For example: Business boundary innovation is a challenge to excavate third-party business value using IoT and BigData, like Nest Business structure innovation may propose re-building business structure from scratch, as Uber does in the taxicab industry The social model innovation is also a big challenge to the new social architecture with the design fr...
In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lea...
