What’s your ‘Crowd Rating’: Linkedin, vTeams and the Future of Work

Everything about our working lives is being virtualized, not just IT applications for hosting in the Cloud.

We’re all migrating to the Cloud in some form or another, aka ‘The Future of Work‘.

What’s Your Crowd Rating?

To see the nature of how work is transforming we only need to look here at one of its major catalysts Linkedin.

Most notably I used to have a resume but now who bothers? and why indeed when instead you can have what is more of a multimedia object.

In addition to the same old same old list of prior job employments, one dimension of my career, you can now also see:

  • First of course now these blogs - Which I also cross-post to my own site, which syndicates to other portals too, maximizing my virtual ‘pounding the pavement’.
  • Active projects that I am involved in, like The Thingcubator, and who I am cooking this up with, as well as those specifically identified as non-profit ’cause’ work.
  • The many best practice guides, I personally have written and also those I have co-authored, again linking to who those co-authors are.

and finally of course, my ‘Crowd Rating’. As you can see I have been endorsed by around 200 people for both ‘Cloud Computing’ and ‘Business Development’.

I have heard many complain of the endorsements system and how with any one allowed to post anything it therefore forms no structure, but to be honest, I am indeed a one tricky pony.

As my wife will attest I can do nothing else of value, but for sure ‘Cloud Computing Business Development‘ is what I do to a very high standard, so in that regard it’s both highly accurate, and for my potential customers a validation by the external market.

Most importantly it’s what I want to be known for, especially online.

There are also the direct recommendations from prior colleagues, but this is more the traditional approach, online. I don`t mean this has lessened in value, but instead that each measures and reports on something different.

One is what you are like to work with, the other is your ‘Social Media Marketing Score’ or other index name - The Crowd is every one online who can even look at your profile, scoring your ‘Social Media Presence’, or not.

This used to be sneered at by many as frivolous, but now it is only a few who still do so who simply haven’t realized how much, and how quickly, the recruitment process has been absorbed into social media, especially the mega sites like Linkedin, for professional hiring.

If this work is of a promotional nature, like most sales and PR work, then the first channel you should turn to is social media, especially Linkedin for business to business lead generation, highlighting how and just how much $$ market value this now has.

vTeams

This Future of Work category will be an ongoing theme, with a particular focus on ‘vTeams’ – Virtual Teams, both the psychology of how they work and also the best tools to use for enabling and managing them.
