Money-starved Israeli start-up iROWS, a browser-based spreadsheet that kicked off in January, is going to shut down on December 31 because Google has sucked up its two founders to beef up the internally developed Spreadsheets widgetry that Google is using to frighten Microsoft.iROWS is no longer accepting user registrations and is advising its patrons to move their spreadsheets to Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Google's recent combination of Writely, the web word processor, and Spreadsheets, where they will need a Google account to share their spreadsheets with others. The exercise will cost iROWS users some features like charts, but at least they get to keep their data. Otherwise, all iROWS spreadsheets will be erased on December 31.
In early September the founders complained on their web site that the operation wasn't 'generating enough money to keep us alive. The banners barely cover the cost of hosting." Apparently Google was one of their exit strategies.
When Google's Spreadsheets debuted, somebody called it an iROWS competitor. Apparently iROWS and Google Spreadsheets have features that the other doesn't and iROWS remarked that some of Google's features "look odd," estimating that iROWS was the better product. As a matter of fact, Google fielding Spreadsheets this summer set off rumors that it had acquired iROWS.
Like Google, iROWS hold the data on its servers.
