Plexxi Pulse—Get Ready for VMworld

Plexxi is busy gearing up for VMworld which takes place August 24 – 28, 2014 in San Francisco. Stop by booth 747 to talk with our team, view live demos, and pick up a pair of our infamous socks! We look forward to seeing you there.

Big Data fabrics enable scalability and increased control in the datacenter. In this week’s PlexxiTube of the week, Dan Bachman explains Plexxi’s Big Data fabrics.

To Scale Is the Answer. The Question Is How.

Arthur Cole offered a sound perspective on scaling and flexibility this week in IT Business Edge. Simply stated, how you scale is as important as what you scale to. Initially, you architect your infrastructure for a particular set of requirements. As applications are added to the mix, different requirements are created. It is important to scale existing requirements while simultaneously accommodating newly created demands. The conclusion here is that scalability and flexibility need to be considered part and parcel. Clustered applications may demand differing requirements, which can quickly render a purpose-built network either obsolete or out of spec. My colleague, Mike Bushong wrote about this very topic last week as it relates to Big Data.

SDN and NFV: Déjà Vu All Over Again. What Vendors Need to Do

In an opinion piece for SDNCentral this week, Greg Whelan reflected on a recent conference by weighing in on vendor messaging. The overarching premise here is sound: focus on a specific use case rather than a general SDN network. Specific use cases will be infinitely easier to sell as they give customers something to say yes to. The comments about rip and replace are correct, and they show up when you are peddling a general networking solution as opposed to something that can be built out separately. I think that integration with OSS/BSS systems is the element that doesn’t get mentioned here.

On the messaging front, I somewhat differ in opinion. During times of technology upheaval, people need a source of truth. Fighting to get your messaging across is counterproductive and the truth becomes convoluted. If you are honest and educational (even at the expense of not pushing your own solution), it will engender you to the customer and allow you to assume the role of a trusted advisor (provided you don’t abuse the position). My colleague Mike Bushong wrote about the importance of use cases recently on the Plexxi blog.

Global network of connected ‘things’

Andy Robb discussed network infrastructure as it relates to the Internet of Things and Big Data in a recent piece for IT Web. The conclusion that no new infrastructure needs to be built might be a bit off. As connectivity increases, there are taxes on the network. All data that has to go back and forth requires a path to get to and from its destination. This puts the interconnect (the network) at the forefront of importance. The real question is how to build a network today that can support this type of load in the future without having to replace existing infrastructure. This is not a simple task as unknown requirements need to be accounted for. That kind of flexibility ends up being the prime requirement for infrastructure today if you want to indeed have the experience where the IoT doesn’t require a massive build out in a few years.

Today we can collect lots and lots of performance data. We build beautiful dashboards and even have fancy query languages to access and transform the data. Still performance data is a secret language only a couple of people understand. The more business becomes digital the more stakeholders are interested in this data including how it relates to business. Some of these people have never used a monitoring tool before. They have a question on their mind like “How is my application doing” but no id...

What happens when the different parts of a vehicle become smarter than the vehicle itself? As we move toward the era of smart everything, hundreds of entities in a vehicle that communicate with each other, the vehicle and external systems create a need for identity orchestration so that all entities work as a conglomerate. Much like an orchestra without a conductor, without the ability to secure, control, and connect the link between a vehicle’s head unit, devices, and systems and to manage the ...
More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smar...

Information technology is an industry that has always experienced change, and the dramatic change sweeping across the industry today could not be truthfully described as the first time we've seen such widespread change impacting customer investments. However, the rate of the change, and the potential outcomes from today's digital transformation has the distinct potential to separate the industry into two camps: Organizations that see the change coming, embrace it, and successful leverage it; and...
In IT, we sometimes coin terms for things before we know exactly what they are and how they’ll be used. The resulting terms may capture a common set of aspirations and goals – as “cloud” did broadly for on-demand, self-service, and flexible computing. But such a term can also lump together diverse and even competing practices, technologies, and priorities to the point where important distinctions are glossed over and lost.
All clouds are not equal. To succeed in a DevOps context, organizations should plan to develop/deploy apps across a choice of on-premise and public clouds simultaneously depending on the business needs. This is where the concept of the Lean Cloud comes in - resting on the idea that you often need to relocate your app modules over their life cycles for both innovation and operational efficiency in the cloud. In his session at @DevOpsSummit at19th Cloud Expo, Valentin (Val) Bercovici, CTO of Soli...
