SYS-CON Events announced today that SendGrid will exhibit at SYS-CON's 15th International Cloud Expo®, which will take place on November 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Founded in 2009, after graduating from the TechStars program, SendGrid has developed a cloud based service that solves the challenge of email delivery by delivering emails on behalf of companies. SendGrid eliminates the complexity of sending email, saving time and money, while providing reliable delivery to the inbox. With over a decade of thought-leadership backed by a stellar record of delivering email, SendGrid is climbing to new heights.
Jim Franklin is the CEO of SendGrid, Inc., a Foundry-backed infrastructure applications company. Prior to his tenure with SendGrid, Jim was the Vice President of Enterprise Performance Management and the General Manager of the Crystal Ball Global Business Unit of Oracle Corporation.
SenGrid Blog: JSON Web Tokens (Again!) and Koa.js
by Yamil Asusta
A few weeks ago, I wrote about using JSON Web Tokens (JWT) as an alternative method of authentication using Go. The post itself contains a basic explanation about JWT and some links for content. In this post, I want to cover pretty much the same things using Koa, a new framework for Node.js.
Koa is mostly a middleware framework which uses generators (only available under the Harmony flag) to control the flow of requests. The reason I mention that it’s a middleware framework is because it doesn’t come with most of the things you would expect a framework to provide, such as routing, body parsers, etc. However, when it comes to middleware, Koa is baller. How the Data Science of Email is Solving Today’s Business Problems
There are 182 billion emails sent every day, generating a lot of data about how recipients and ISPs respond. Many marketers take a more-is-better approach to stats, preferring to have the ability to slice and dice their email lists based numerous arbitrary stats. However, fundamentally what really matters is whether or not sending an email to a particular recipient will generate value. Data
Scientists can design high-level insights such as engagement prediction models and content clusters that allow marketers to cut through the noise and design their campaigns around strong, predictive signals, rather than arbitrary statistics.
SendGrid sends up to half a billion emails a day for customers such as Pinterest and GitHub. All this email adds up to more text than produced in the entire twitterverse. We track events like clicks, opens and deliveries to help improve deliverability for our customers - adding up to over 50 Billion useful events every month. While SendGrid data covers only about 2% of all non-spam email activity in the world, it gives SendGrid a unique snapshot of email activity spanning from the senders to the recipients and inbox providers like gmail and yahoo. To cope with data of this scale SendGrid has designed and implemented custom data structures to store 10s of billions of items in memory on a single commodity machine.
In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Aaron Beach, Senior Data Scientist at SendGrid, will discuss how SendGrid has used technologies like this to predict recipient behavior and improve sender deliverability at minimal cost per email.
He will share his research based on analysis of billions of email interactions:
- The data we collect: Email activity and SMTP events
- The problems we solve: Predicting recipient engagement
- The data structure we use: Combinatorial Bloom Filters
Through a deep dive into back-end email systems, data scientists can profile inbox behaviors to learn how to reduce spam complaints, increase delivery and improve recipient engagement.
Aaron Beach is a data scientist with experience in email services, energy systems, privacy, social networks, mobile apps, natural language processing, recommendation systems and Big Data. He has a PhD in Computer Science and has published over 25 research papers.
Cloud Expo's giant Silicon View billboard, on Highway 101 in the heart of Silicon Valley, is viewed by more than 1.3 million motorists per week

Today’s enterprise is being driven by disruptive competitive and human capital requirements to provide enterprise application access through not only desktops, but also mobile devices. To retrofit existing programs across all these devices using traditional programming methods is very costly and time consuming – often prohibitively so. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jesse Shiah, CEO, President, and Co-Founder of AgilePoint Inc., discussed how you can create applications that run on all mobile ...

The move in recent years to cloud computing services and architectures has added significant pace to the application development and deployment environment. When enterprise IT can spin up large computing instances in just minutes, developers can also design and deploy in small time frames that were unimaginable a few years ago. The consequent move toward lean, agile, and fast development leads to the need for the development and operations sides to work very closely together. Thus, DevOps become...

The Internet of Things is tied together with a thin strand that is known as time. Coincidentally, at the core of nearly all data analytics is a timestamp. When working with time series data there are a few core principles that everyone should consider, especially across datasets where time is the common boundary. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Jim Scott, Director of Enterprise Strategy & Architecture at MapR Technologies, discussed single-value, geo-spatial, and log time series dat...

Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using ...

How do APIs and IoT relate? The answer is not as simple as merely adding an API on top of a dumb device, but rather about understanding the architectural patterns for implementing an IoT fabric. There are typically two or three trends: Exposing the device to a management framework Exposing that management framework to a business centric logic Exposing that business layer and data to end users. This last trend is the IoT stack, which involves a new shift in the separation of what stuff happe...
