Can Cloud Computing Save the Planet? By @IanKhanLive | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

The cloud is an excellent driver for sustainability

Creating global change that is actually good for the entire world is a mammoth task. A population of almost 7 billion as of 2015 is taking its toll on the planet, as it  survives the brunt of keeping the works going. What role can cloud computing play in making it easier for all of us?

Did you know that:

  • There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today than at any point in the last 800,000 years.
  • In total, the U.S. emits approximately 6 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year. Forty-percent of that comes from power plant emissions alone.
  • Every day 70 million tons of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere.

These and hundreds of other interesting, well shocking actually, facts help us understand the severity of the catastrophe that is taking place today.

As amazing as the cloud is, the actual benefit of all the solutions on the cloud put together would only be in the positive if they yielded results that were positive overall. We are not talking about small things such as being able to use a smartphone app or being productive at the workplace. This is bigger – we are talking about an overall net positive effect on everything around us and the human race as a whole. Can cloud computing help us make the world a better place? Can the cloud and all the technology within save the planet? And for that matter even help offset the massive damage that is being done through other means?

The simple answer is, yes!

Cloud can help immediately in at least the following tasks:

  • Reduce impact through reducing environmental waste (ewaste)
  • Help create policies that help lower the environmental impact of conducting business (go paperless)
  • Automate processes that help reduce the amount of resources they consume
  • Power the faster development of solutions that can heal the world (faster research, tests, cutting-edge stuff)

Thanks to the cloud, today technologies are developing even more rapidly. Take for example that cloud technology is helping particle accelerators, such as the Hardon Collider, work better. Cloud-based technologies are powering the field of medicine by helping create faster models and facilitate cutting-edge research. These are just two cases, and there are hundreds of other applications of cloud computing that can dramatically help save the planet from a number of adversities.

The cloud is an excellent driver for sustainability, and organizations that are committed to the environment, and have or do not have sustainability initiatives in place, should talk to anyone who knows about the true potential of the cloud. As an enabler for sustainability, the cloud can not only power but lay the foundations of sustainability initiatives and accelerate multiple aspects of it.

Let this be an initial starter for a larger dialogue. What are your thoughts?

CNN Futurist, Forbes Contributor, Author, 3 Time TEDx Speaker and Technology Futurist, over the last 20 years Ian Khan has had the privilege to serve the needs of over 5000 organizations by fueling their growth through technology solutions. He has helped a diverse set of businesses ranging from Technology Companies, Oil Companies, Power Generation & Renewables Operators, Microsoft Ecosystem Partners, SAP Customers and Partners, Healthcare Providers, Manufacturers, Facility Operators, Startups, Educational Institutions, Nonprofits & associations and more. Ian’s experiences with these organizations led him to a unique position of being able to identify the common challenges of growth for all these organizations. The bottom line as he found out, is that we all are hungry for success and want to grow and make a difference. Where we fall short is by failing to understand our environment and taking the right action within that environment. After 20 years serving the needs of the industry Ian’s natural pivot was to answer his calling and help organizations at a broader level understand what tomorrow brings. His work and study of all these organizations brought forward very unique perspectives that he now share through his work. Today, hands down, we live in the great time for humanity. Technology is a great thing, but it also has its victims. Many organizations of tomorrow will fail under the pressure of a fast changing world, much of which is fueled and driven by technology. Ian’s mission is to help organizations avoid that pitfall, and propel themselves into success in today’s era and go from digital disruption to digital transformation in the fastest and most sustainable way. This is the only way, according to him, we can together create limitless value, create solutions that are faced by us locally as well as by others around the globe, and make the world a happier place. Today Ian’s work spans working with people by delivering keynotes, consulting and by promoting his 7 –Axioms methodology through his book and workshops. He is also working on an ambitious project of releasing a documentary in spring of 2018 called Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 will capture the thoughts and insights of some of the world’s leading thinkers and help us understand the 4th Industrial Revolution, Its Impact, and how we can all be have an opportunity to be part of the emerging future and make the right choices. DevOps has long focused on reinventing the SDLC (e.g. with CI/CD, ARA, pipeline automation etc.), while reinvention of IT Ops has lagged. However, new approaches like Site Reliability Engineering, Observability, Containerization, Operations Analytics, and ML/AI are driving a resurgence of IT Ops. In this session our expert panel will focus on how these new ideas are [putting the Ops back in DevOps orbringing modern IT Ops to DevOps].
Darktrace is the world's leading AI company for cyber security.
