It's spring in the Northeast, and this week we're launching a new blog post series, "Everything You Want to Know about Windows Server 2003 Migration." Why a series of posts on WS2003? Even as summer and EOS is just months away, our "State of Readiness for Windows Server 2003 End of Support" survey reveals the shocking truth: most of you haven't done anything about remediation yet, and most will not complete your upgrades before the deadline.

Fortunately, AppZero and our partners have been very, very busy. In case you can't hear the rage from there, it's been a rough winter in Massachusetts, where extreme cold and record-breaking snowfall completely shut down the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, often referred to as the MBTA or The T, the public operator of our bus, subway, commuter rail, and ferry routes.

If ever there was a lesson in how prioritizing expansion over maintenance can lead to disaster, the MBTA is it. Now more than $6.7B in debt, the T and the city have filed for Federal assistance, the General Manager has stepped down, and our transit system is facing a massive backlog in maintenance issues. We're currently waiting to see what a special commission will decide -- an inevitable audit, possible receivership and/or going back to an angry public to raise fares and taxes are distinct possibilities.

When it comes to Windows Server 2003 EOS, a wait and see, postpone maintenance for other less painful programs strategy is definitely not recommended. Don't be like the MBTA and defer much needed maintenance. Invest in modernization to protect against the inevitable and growing risk of an unforeseen event (security exploit, compliance failure or stalled new implementation due to WS2003 coverage).

The great news is a lot of companies -- especially those in banking, insurance, pharmaceutical and other regulated industries -- have forged out ahead of you. They've migrated the applications they anticipated would be difficult, figured out which applications could be moved to the cloud and learned all sorts of important lessons.

  • How do I get past being overwhelmed by the assessment phase?
  • What do we do when we're missing source code?
  • How do we convince business units to migrate aging applications?
