Happy Stacki Day! By @DMacVittie | @CloudExpo #Cloud

Announcing the Stacki Open Source Project release 1.0.

We at StackIQ have been burning the midnight oil in order to meet all of our commitments and still make this day come for the community. Today, we released the first iteration of Stacki, the fastest open source bare metal installer. Not excited yet? Read on.

Stacki is a streamlined version of the base installer from our flagship product StackIQ Boss. It has been used on over one million servers, and has had the kinks worked out. This is not a “great idea, let’s get a first iteration out there,” this is a baked idea that, because of our long association with open source (we grew out of the Rocks Cluster Distribution project conducted at the San Diego Supercomputer Center located on the University of California, San Diego campus), we wanted to give back to the community.

Will we have relevant things for sale? Of course we will – Like StackIQ Boss, our commercial cluster management product for Big Data and OpenStack. But not on the project. For that all we want is your commentary and participation if you have the time.

The installer is designed to take any bare physical or virtual machine, and turn it into a working Linux server on your network. You can customize RAID configuration, networking, partitioning, and a ton more. It also has hooks to make it work within your Ops environment – whether you want to use Chef, or Puppet, or bash scripts, or whatever to customize your install, Stacki will let you use the tools you already have. And finally, it is expandable.

We released Stacki with only the base Linux server defined, but right away at release we have a “How-To” document explaining one way to add the installation and configuration of your apps to the server install. More How-Tos are coming soon, offering other options and paths to getting your apps installed and configured with the OS to speed your time to deliver working servers. Stacki is different, it’s a parameterized installer – so no “golden images” to track, just definitions, RPMS, and the like that are assembled at install time to deliver the options (like hostname or RAID config) you’ve set for your server on the hardware the server presents to the installer. It’s fast, it is designed to do as much as possible in parallel, meaning no waiting around for one before starting the next. And it’s expandable.

Join us on Github, or visit the Stacki website to get started playing with it today!

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on organizations of all sizes and in every line of business. Fintech is a constant battleground for this technology expanding trend and the lessons learned here can be applied anywhere. Digital transformation isn't going to go away and the need for greater understanding and skills around managing, guiding, and understanding the greater landscape of change is required for effective transformations.
Digital transformation is about embracing digital technologies into a company's culture to better connect with its customers, automate processes, create better tools, enter new markets, etc. Such a transformation requires continuous orchestration across teams and an environment based on open collaboration and daily experiments. In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Alex Casalboni, Technical (Cloud) Evangelist at Cloud Academy, explored and discussed the most urgent unsolved challenges to achieve full cloud literacy in the enterprise world.
"We do one of the best file systems in the world. We learned how to deal with Big Data many years ago and we implemented this knowledge into our software," explained Jakub Ratajczak, Business Development Manager at MooseFS, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
