Revenue generation is a good thing and the cloud helps in doing that

We had over 300 conversations about Cloud Monetization at Cloud Expo just a few weeks ago. What was more surprising was the fact that Cloud Monetization is not something new that is revolutionizing the industry, but a natural need of the market. Imagine that you came up with the new cake recipe. It doesn't change the fact that people need to eat!

Moving on from cakes to the cloud, here are some observations from Cloud Expo.

1. Cloud Is Everywhere
Businesses of every size need the cloud. Not because they want to jump on technology but because the cloud helps with the key needs of every business. High efficiency, high productivity and high ROI. It's a choice that every business needs to make sooner rather than later. It's time for vendors not only to just sell their solutions and announce from rooftops how delicious their bread is, but to sit under the tree and help audiences understand why the apple needs to fall down to the ground. Solution providers have a greater duty of informing customers about why technology helps them achieve their goals rather than making a sales pitch in every conversation.

2. The Cloud Is Revenue Oriented
Whatever a business uses the cloud for, you have to accept that everything relating to a business points to revenue, and second there is nothing wrong with revenue. Businesses need to generate revenue to be functional and to stay operational. If you stop making money, you simply go out of business. So please let's agree that revenue generation is what organizations primarily do, and while doing so they help customers derive value from various things. Revenue generation is a good thing and the cloud helps in doing that.

3. Dive into the Cloud
If you are trying to find ways to dive into the cloud, well get started. A good place to start is at places where the cloud congregates. This includes industry events, blogs, and online resources and so on. Meeting people and having meaningful conversations is a great place to begin and there are many opportunities to do this. One of the best local events are Meetups. Look for Meetups in your city and see if any fits your needs.

When building large, cloud-based applications that operate at a high scale, it's important to maintain a high availability and resilience to failures. In order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures in other areas of your application. "Fly two mistakes high" is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby. It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue flying with room to still make mistakes. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee Atchison, Principal Cloud Architect and Advocate at New Relic, discussed how this same philosophy can be applied to highly scaled applications, and can dramatically increase your resilience to failure.
