In recent sporting events the focus has been on providing real time updates on mobile devices such as tablets, phones and leveraging the cloud. Cloud is supporting this year's Wimbledon tennis tournament in a big way. The infrastructure is hosted on IBMs Cloud that provides a scalable and on-demand environment that can be dynamically provisioned quickly, and then it can be taken down after the event. Peaks in usage are handled by the Cloud and there is real time information for fans that is available on fingertips for matches on 19 courts. During the tournament millions of users access information about favorite tennis players, matches and results. However during the rest of the year demand is lower. Since the Cloud is being leveraged, there is no need to spend time and money to provision and manage new infrastructure and to reduce capacity based on lower usage. In addition thousands of cyber security incidents are processed every day by the IBM Cloud security framework.

Wimbledon has a new responsive web site that is also geared towards mobile applications. The web site has live scores and videos and vast information about the tournament. Wimbledon lets fans download free apps for iPhone and Android. The focus is on social media so that fans can get real time information using Twitter, Facebook etc. The analytics tool Slam Tracker lets fans have information related to scores and tournament information. The Slam Tracker assesses information for about eight years with over 40 million data points to come up with patterns for players. In addition to this information there is information gathered from sensors on the courts to provide detailed analysis. Hence users can keep in touch with matches, scores, interviews and the latest tournament news. With these analytics capabilities, there is a data transformation from just what is occurring to trying to analyzing information in many ways and trying to anticipate what may occur.

Analytics through IBM Info Sphere Streams and Watson Engagement Advisor processes live streams of data and performs analysis on that. This allows Wimbledon organizers to assess information quickly, determine historical context and provide it to fans through social media and other channels. Analytics is based on determining patterns and this information is further used across social media. Cloud is used at a lot of other events due to the easy provisioning and scalability aspects. To successfully deploy Cloud solutions, it is important to look at the latency, scalability and thresholds that cause new instances to crop up automatically. As part of the load testing, the peak usage has to be estimated and the load that is determined has to be input to the applications to make sure they can sustain it for a secure Cloud environment. Performance metrics have to be setup and monitored to ensure adequate operations to the desired levels.

The key is to develop a Cloud strategy, start planning, allocate resources and look at alternatives well in advance to allocate appropriate time for performing testing activities such as simulation and performance testing. The outcome at Wimbledon is: Mobile Cloud and Analytics - winner

In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, John Newton, CTO, Founder and Chairman of Alfresco, described how to scale cloud-based content management repositories to store, manage, and retrieve billions of documents and related information with fast and linear scalability. He addressed the challenges of scaling document repositories to this level; architectural approaches for coordinating data; search and storage technologies, Solr, and Amazon storage and database technologies; the breadth of use cases that modern content systems need to support; how to support user applications that require subsecond response times.
An edge gateway is an essential piece of infrastructure for large scale cloud-based services. In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Mikey Cohen, Manager, Edge Gateway at Netflix, detailed the purpose, benefits and use cases for an edge gateway to provide security, traffic management and cloud cross region resiliency. He discussed how a gateway can be used to enhance continuous deployment and help testing of new service versions and get service insights and more. Philosophical and architectural approaches to what belongs in a gateway vs what should be in services were also discussed. Real examples of how gateway services are used in front of nearly all of Netflix's consumer facing traffic showed how gateway infrastructure is used in real highly available, massive scale services.
