SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 03/19/08 -- Although an estimated 18 million people practice yoga in the US, many may not understand or be aware of the philosophical basis of yoga: the 2,500 year-old Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Pranamaya, Inc. has partnered with master yoga teacher, healer and author Nischala Joy Devi to produce an abridged audiobook companion to her popular book, "The Secret Power of Yoga: A Woman's Guide to the Heart and Spirit of the Yoga Sutras," (publisher: Random House, 2007). Devi is the first woman to write a heart-centered interpretation of the ancient Sutras. This 6-CD set contains seven hours of Devi's commentary, stories and guided experiences focusing on Asthaanga Yoga, the Eight-Faceted Path, and includes special material not found in the book.
The Sanskrit word "Sutra" is related to the English word "suture." The Sutras are intended to weave together our material and spiritual lives with the intention of bringing us to wholeness, Devi explains in the audiobook. In this CD set, Devi covers the portion of the Sutras that she believes will provide the most accessible foundation for a deepening study and practice of yoga in our lives -- well beyond what's found on the yoga mat. In addition to providing clear explanations of the Sutras, she provides real life examples of how these ageless teachings have been transformative in her own life and in the lives of others.
"I wanted to give women an interpretation of the Sutras that they could relate to and apply to their lives," says Devi, who for more than 30 years had been a highly respected international advocate for yoga's direct uses for spiritual growth and complete healing. "My desire is to share the feminine, intuitive, heart-centered aspects of the Yoga Sutras so women can easily access the peace and joy that's naturally in their hearts." Devi's presentation is progressive and well-organized, making it easy for people to incorporate the teachings into their busy lives. The guided experiences offer accessible, practical experiences of the Sutras, providing powerful ways to use the ancient wisdom to address today's issues and concerns. "The Sutras are meant to teach people how to find the harmony, compassion, joy, balance and other qualities that we have within us so we can live more fulfilling, happy lives."
Devi and Pranamaya, Inc. chose to put "The Secret Power of Yoga" into an audiobook format to best fit today's busy lifestyles; the CDs make an excellent soundtrack to many daily activities, such as driving to and from work, shuttling children back and forth to school and lessons or while perform other tasks. Although written intentionally from a woman's perspective, this CD series can greatly benefit all those who seek to understand the Yoga Sutras from a more positive, heart-centered understanding.
"The Secret Power of Yoga" CD set can be used alone or as a companion to the book from which it is derived. The CD set is available in select retail stores and online for $36.95.
