GitHub and Lighthouse Tap Private Cluster from Engine Yard

Popular Ruby on Rails Applications Choose Engine Yard as Exclusive Hosting Partner, Engine Yard Customers Receive Complimentary

SAN FRANCISCO, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Engine Yard, provider of the leading Ruby and Rails deployment platform, today announced it is sponsoring the newly launched GitHub service, a distributed version control system, and the popular Lighthouse bug tracking application.

By hosting both GitHub and Lighthouse on Engine Yard's scalable platform, Ruby and Rails developers can be confident that their source code and ticket tracking remain highly available and secure. Engine Yard is donating a private cluster as a part of its ongoing efforts to support open source communities and nurture open source projects. Engine Yard itself uses both services in developing its own open source projects Merb and Rubinius.

As part of the partnership, Engine Yard will provide their customers with a free Bronze bug tracking plan from Lighthouse (http://sera.lighthouseapp.com/plans) and a free medium-sized Git repository hosting account (http://github.com/plans).

"I've used many other hosting services before so I know that the level of support Engine Yard provides is far superior to other companies," said Rick Olson, Lighthouse developer and a Rails core committer. "Engine Yard solves all the dirty back-end server issues that we don't have the time or interest to handle."

"There would be no GitHub without Engine Yard," said GitHub Co-Founder Chris Wanstrath. "Our site is Unix-based and very sysadmin-dependent. Engine Yard's dedicated engineers are experts at solving all the problems associated with Unix. If I had to have my small team resolve these issues, GitHub would never have launched this year."

Launched earlier this month, GitHub already hosts repositories for nearly 5,000 open source projects. Approximately 300 new ones are added every day and hundreds of paying customers use the service. Several well-known Ruby and Rails-related open source projects are using GitHub, including Ruby on Rails itself, RSpec, Prototype, HAML, Capistrano, DataMapper, Engine Yard's Merb and Rubinius projects and more. Lighthouse has more than 8,000 accounts and nearly 17,000 daily visitors.

Engine Yard's private GitHub/Lighthouse cluster includes 24 CPUs, 48 hard disks and 96 gigabytes of RAM, ensuring that these services can scale as much as necessary.

"Engine Yard is committed to making these two production Rails-based services mission-critical. Bug tracking and version control are essential and used daily with software development. Since our open source projects, Merb and Rubinius, depend on GitHub and Lighthouse, Engine Yard knows just how critical uptime is to developers," said Ezra Zygmuntowicz, an Engine Yard founder and lead architect.

Wide and cheap availability of cloud-based media services is upon us. With the transformations these services are already bringing to the consumption of music, video and interactive media, change has likewise come to professional workflows. Cloud is a shift from the focus on underlying technology implementation to leveraging existing implementations and further building upon them. Cloud orchestration or a network of clouds is the wave of the future where these clouds can operate with elasticity, scalability, and efficiency. Effective service management is an important aspect of managing such networks. The transition to the cloud will enable the further aggregation of composite web services and enhanced business-to-business capabili...

"Having been in the IT field for many years, I believe the cloud computing chapter in the industry is an exciting one and I am proud to be a part of it," said National Reconaissance Office (NRO) Chief Information Officer Jill T. Singer Tuesday, as it was announced that she was one of 10 winners of the 2012 CloudNOW "Top Ten Women in Cloud" Awards.
2011 was a year of rapid adoption for public and private cloud services. Instant and on-demand server provisioning was the driving force behind the massive growth. On top, cloud server templates and script automation simplified application installation for simple and pre-defined application stacks, but have not targeted more complex enterprise application environments. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, John Yung, CEO of Appcara, will discuss how 2012 will be the year for app...
As more enterprises are adopting clouds, the nature of cloud computing is changing. Previously, clouds were used to test applications or for non-mission critical applications. Today, enterprises are using clouds for cost-saving advantages and launching more mission critical applications that have defined performance needs. Building a cloud computing environment with on-demand access to compute, network, and storage resources requires an elastic infrastructure at multiple levels. Virtualization combined with x86 servers has transformed the way we scale out compute resources. Unfortunately, legacy Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage architectures are rooted in rigid mainframe-era designs, and are fundamentally mismatched with the dynamic, shared modern data center. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, ...
