ST. LOUIS, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- During a recent invited talk at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, noted physicist, inventor and developer in the area of Artificial Intelligence, Stephen Thaler, PhD, disputed the claims of Ray Kurzweil and Jeff Hawkins that useful artificial intelligence is futuristic.

Contrary to Kurzweil's belief that the concept of "singularity" in artificial intelligence remains on the horizon, Dr. Thaler has already developed an artificial intelligence patent suite that allows contemplative, creative, and even conscious AI systems to build themselves. Furthermore, all of the neural mechanisms recently discussed by Jeff Hawkins in his recently released book "On Intelligence" have long ago been incorporated into this patent suite. As a result, Dr. Thaler's systems have autonomously developed even more advanced cognitive skills than those anticipated by either Kurzweil or Hawkins

The development of inventive neural networks that could originate new concepts and strategies at the human level and perhaps beyond was first announced as far back as 1993 in Scientific American. Further developments in this area were again detailed in both the New Scientist and the Economist in 1997.

For decades, Dr. Thaler has been a pioneer in the area of artificial intelligence. Beginning with some very highly unorthodox theoretical physics experiments in 1975, he embarked upon what many AI onlookers, such as NASA, have called AI's best bet at creating human to trans-human level intelligence in machines. In these initial, strictly curiosity-driven investigations, he built, trained, and then destroyed artificial neural networks and discovered that all of the key features of the core near-death experience were duplicated within these destruction sequences. Most importantly, he observed that within their last gasps, expiring neural networks produced coherent and often useful new ideas. After very careful experimentation, he discerned those levels of damage producing the highest turnover of such novel concepts and then attached another neural network to automatically mine for the best of these emerging ideas. In so doing, he produced an invention called the "Device for the Autonomous Generation of Useful Information," or what the attentive public came to know as the "Creativity Machine Paradigm."

In the ensuing, yet muffled revolution, Creativity Machines devised highly advanced means of learning from their own mistakes, bootstrapping themselves from a state of total ignorance to iteratively improve their creative prowess. Robots starting life effectively as 'cybernetic road kill' began to fidget, thereafter learning without any human assistance whatsoever, how to walk and self-originate complex, Machiavellian battlefield strategies. Other Creativity Machine based systems began to think about topics like chemical discovery, cumulatively learning how to make better, technologically valuable materials. Yet other varieties of these advanced cybernetic systems knitted the necessary brain pathways to produce machine vision systems that blew all comparable schemes out of the water.
