Hummer Winblad Venture Partners to Present at Cloud Computing Conference &Expo

Cloud computing is changing the ground rules for startup companies

Cloud computing is changing the ground rules for startup companies – both in their infrastructure choices and in the bar for technology development prior to funding.

Lars Leckie, a Principal with Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, will walk through the venture capital perspective of the cloud computing market covering both consumer and enterprise usage. This discussion will cover the tools for cloud computing as well as the leverage that portfolio companies are achieving with cloud computing. In the spirit of the event, he will present the session entirely from slides served from Amazon Web Services!

Speaker Bio:
Lars Leckie is a Principal at Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and has played a key role in the firm’s investments in Aria Systems (SaaS billing and customer management) and VKernel (Virtualization Infrastructure). While he spends less time programming now, he started his technical career coding and hacking computer games. He is the holder of several US patents. Prior to joining Hummer Winblad Venture Partners in 2006, Leckie was involved in founding and operational roles at startup companies. He was a co-founder of AutoFarm (now Novariant), a company focused on GPS and robotics, where he was in charge of strategy, product marketing, business development and building the sales team across three continents. He has also been involved with the founding team of SportBug, a GPS and Internet fitness company.

Cloud Computing Conference & Expo, November 19-20-21, 2008
SYS-CON Events announced today that Amazon CTO Dr. Werner Vogels will deliver the opening keynote at SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Conference & Expo (www.cloudcomputingexpo.com), which will take place November 19-21, at the Fairmont Hotel at the heart of Silicon Valley, in San Jose, California. The first International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo will be colocated with the 4th International Virtualization Conference & Expo (www.virtualizationconference.com)..

Building the right infrastructure that can scale up or down at a moment's notice can be a complicated and expensive task, but it's essential in today's business landscape. This applies to an enterprise trying to cut-costs, a young business unexpectedly saturated with customer demand, or a start-up looking to launch.

There are many challenges when building a reliable, flexible architecture that can manage unpredictable behaviors of today's internet business. This presentation will review some of the lessons learned from building one of the world's largest distributed systems; Amazon.com. The focus will be on state management which is one of the dominating factors in the scalability, reliability, performance and cost-effectiveness of the overall system.

As more enterprises are adopting clouds, the nature of cloud computing is changing. Previously, clouds were used to test applications or for non-mission critical applications. Today, enterprises are using clouds for cost-saving advantages and launching more mission critical applications that have defined performance needs. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, Eric Shepcaro, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Telx, will discuss how distributed computing has many advantages. It wou...
Building a cloud computing environment with on-demand access to compute, network, and storage resources requires an elastic infrastructure at multiple levels. Virtualization combined with x86 servers has transformed the way we scale out compute resources. Unfortunately, legacy Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage architectures are rooted in rigid mainframe-era designs, and are fundamentally mismatched with the dynamic, shared modern data center. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, ...

2011 was a year of rapid adoption for public and private cloud services. Instant and on-demand server provisioning was the driving force behind the massive growth. On top, cloud server templates and script automation simplified application installation for simple and pre-defined application stacks, but have not targeted more complex enterprise application environments. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, John Yung, CEO of Appcara, will discuss how 2012 will be the year for app...
