An A to Z of Cloud Computing in New York City

A round-up of the Cloud Computing themes & topics being discussed March 30-April 1, 2009, in New York City

From Apache Hadoop and Google App Engine to Web-Scale Computing and real-world Web Services in action, a round-up of the Cloud Computing themes & topics being discussed March 30-April 1, 2009, in New York City by the world-class speaker faculty at SYS-CON's 2nd International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo being held in The Roosevelt Hotel, in midtown Manhattan.

Apache Hadoop - What are the challenges of web-scale computing and what has Yahoo!'s approach been to addressing these issues? This is the principal question that will be answered in New York City by Ajay Anand, Director for Grid Computing at Yahoo! - in a session that will provide an overview of Apache Hadoop, an open source distributed computing platform that provides a scalable infrastructure that enables computation across thousands of nodes using over petabytes of storage.

App Engine Datastore - How is Google's App Engine Datastore designed, and how does that design enable scalability? What does that in turn mean for applications designers, particularly if they are coming from a background of relational databases? Google Developer Advocate Joe Gregorio will be giving a technical deep-dive session on the App Engine Datastore.

Application Design & Employment in the Cloud - What are the challenges and opportunities for application design and deployment in the Cloud? RightScale CTO Thorsten von Eicken is giving a session in New York in which he will discuss the evolving cloud landscape, the new issues it raises, and approaches and solutions that yield practical results for those considering leveraging the clouds today.

Cloud APIs and Resources - Peter Coffee, Director of Platform Research at Salesforce.com will be giving a session in New York City examining the current state of play and recommending best practices for buyers, sellers and resellers of cloud APIs and resources.

Cloud Security - Security is consistently rated as a leading customer concern impeding the full scale adoption of Cloud Computing. At the same time, security is viewed as complicated and painful. Glenn Brunette, Distinguished Engineer and Chief Security Architect at Sun, is giving a session that will help to ease the pain by focusing on the key issues to be considered along with specific best practices for deployment. The session will showcase a number of security models for IaaS machine images based upon these best practices.

Cloud Providers - What are the generic requirements faced by those wishing to be internal or public cloud providers? Egenera VP Ken Oestreich will be examining how the leading compute cloud providers built their infrastructure management tools. His significant focus will be on how to approach managing the physical hardware infrastructure, networking and storage that underpins any native or virtual environment.

The Complementary Cloud - In cloud computing non-proprietary protocols and fully disclosed interfaces let service consumers assemble solutions from multiple service providers, using each in the areas where its distinctive technologies and high-leverage APIs offer maximum advantage in creating new value - or releasing it from current IT assets. Peter Coffee, Director of Platform Research at Salesforce.com will be giving a session in New York City examining the current state of play and recommending best practices for buyers, sellers and resellers of cloud APIs and resources.

Enterprise-Level Security - Enterprises must quickly get up to speed on not only how to deploy clusters of servers to the cloud, but also to protect them with a security perimeter they control. Patrick Kerpan, CTO of CohesiveFT, will be giving a session outlining key considerations when evaluating virtual cloud solutions and exploring how companies can secure their assets in the cloud.

From Licensing to SaaS - Kadient CEO Brian Zanghi is giving a session covering key lessons he learned when transforming a traditional enterprise software vendor into a SaaS company. Zanghi will present a set of guidelines that can help other software vendors considering adopting the SaaS model to improve their chances of success.

Government Cloud Computing - Cloud computing has captured the attention of many government IT decision makers. The U.S. Defense Department’s Defense Information System Agency is, in fact, already fielding a cloud computing infrastructure. This session will review the opportunities and important trends in this market segment.

IaaS see Infrastructure as a Service

Infrastructure as a Service - Building the right infrastructure that can scale up or down at a moment's notice can be a complicated and expensive task, but it's essential in today's business landscape. The CTO of Amazon.com, Dr Werner Vogels, is giving the Opening Keynote in New York City. He will review some of the lessons learned from building one of the world's largest distributed systems - Amazon.com. The focus will be on one of the dominating factors in the scalability, reliability, performance and cost-effectiveness of the overall system - state management.

Machine Image Deployments - Security is consistently rated as a leading customer concern impeding the full scale adoption of Cloud Computing.

Multiple Clouds - How do you deploy an app across multiple clouds? RightScale CTO Thorsten von Eicken is giving a session in which he will discuss the evolving cloud landscape, the new issues it raises, and approaches and solutions that yield practical results for those considering leveraging the clouds today.

On-Demand IT - An enterprise using cloud computing as an IT infrastructure needs on-demand agility, so the size of the server provided by the cloud is easily changed, and should have no limits. The Founder, Chairman & CTO of 3Leaf Systems, Bob Quinn, will be giving a session addressing how networking infrastructure and servers are evolving to bring on demand IT to the cloud and to finally create the Dynamic Data Center.

Public & Private Clouds - In his Day Two keynote, Dr Kristof Kloeckner, IBM's CTO of Cloud Computing, will discuss the importance of dynamic infrastructures and service management for both public and private clouds, cloud service life cycles, and integration between public clouds and enterprise services.

Real-Time Cloud Computing - In a highly anticipated case study session the Creative Director for Forbes.com, Jeff Bauer, will discuss how Forbes.com is working with Xignite to leverage cloud computing and web services to provide real-time BATS Exchange stock quotes to readers of one of the world’s most highly trafficked financial websites.

Securing Your IT Assets in the Cloud - Enterprises must quickly get up to speed on not only how to deploy clusters of servers to the cloud, but also to protect them with a security perimeter they control. Patrick Kerpan, CTO of CohesiveFT, will be giving a session outlining key considerations when evaluating virtual cloud solutions and exploring how companies can secure their assets in the cloud.

Security Models for IaaS - Security is consistently rated as a leading customer concern impeding the full scale adoption of Cloud Computing.
