Security Looms Large as Major Cloud Computing Issue for Enterprise IT

Securing your enterprise data effectively ranks as one of the key considerations when evaluating a virtual cloud solution

With Sun's Open Cloud Platform announced today, the industry took one step closer toward virtual private data centers being a reality. But one key aspect that enterprises must quickly get up to speed on is not only how to protect clusters of servers to the cloud with a security perimeter. Anyone serious about deploying Enterprise IT to the cloud must understand the unique characteristics of cloud security and the challenges specific to compliance and governance.

This is widely understood in the industry. Patrick Kerpan, for example, CTO of CohesiveFT, comments:

"According to leading industry analysts, security is one of the gating factors preventing Enterprise adoption of cloud solutions. This session will outline key considerations when evaluating virtual cloud solutions and explore how companies can secure their assets in the cloud."

And Omer Trajman, Director of Field Engineering for Vertica, who is an authority on cloud-based databases and has helped customers with large-scale data warehouse database deployments like Verizon, Comcast, JP Morgan, and Vonage, agrees that for all the Cloud’s benefits, there are new considerations when it comes to application deployment and data security outside of the enterprise.

"When data is stored on your premises, access is strictly managed and guarded, and often the concern is securing your machines from external unauthorized access. Out in the cloud everything is networked and accessible, which requires a different approach," Trajman observes.

Kerpan and Trajman, along with a welter of their industry peers with special knowledge of security issues, are featured speakers at SYS-CON's upcoming 3-day Cloud Computing Conference & Expo in New York, where one of the tracks is specifically devoted to "Cloud Testing, Security & Management."

Among the 102 differerent breakout and general sessions on offer in New York (view Schedule here), the main security-focused sessions include:

One of the cloud’s biggest draws is the capability to virtualize computing resources, allowing it to be consumed with the click of a mouse. But behind that simple click is an enormous infrastructure challenge that has recently been cited as a major cause for slower enterprise adoption. Enterprises can better prepare for this shift and take full advantage of future computing benefits. Between architecture design and migration planning, the road can be long, so what do you do with your talent? I...

Budget constraints can leave some of the best, most creative and most ingenious innovations on the cutting room floor. It’s a true dilemma for developers and innovators – why spend the time creating, when a project could be abandoned in a blink? That was the old world. In the new world of IT, developers rule. They have access to resources they can spin up instantly. A hyb...
