Burton Group Announces In-Depth Cloud Coverage

Many organizations look to the cloud as a potential cost-savings boon by moving internally hosted IT services to outside

Burton Group, a research and consulting firm focused on in-depth analysis of enterprise technologies announces a new research coverage area focused on understanding, defining, integration, and the optimization of cloud computing.

Cloud computing is changing the economics of IT. Many organizations look to the cloud as a potential cost-savings boon by moving internally hosted IT services to external hosting providers. Other IT organizations view the cloud as a potential disaster recovery plan or as on-demand capacity to boost business continuity and customer service levels. Multiple definitions, competing vendor offerings, undefined risks, and new business models obscure cloud computing, slowing down adoption.

Burton Group defines cloud computing as the set of disciplines, technologies, and business models used to render IT capabilities as on-demand services. "On-demand" permits agile deployment of services within an enterprise; it also permits delivery of services as utilities in an open market subject to competition.

At Burton Group Catalyst Conference 2009, presentations will spotlight this important subject, and help IT organizations gain insight into important cloud issues, answer key questions and leverage the cloud to create a competitive business advantage. Sessions on hosting applications and systems in external clouds, will show IT organizations the potential available to reduce the power, space, capital equipment, and management costs associated with hosting IT services internally. In addition, building an internal cloud can improve the reliability and availability of IT services offered by IT organizations and facilitate external cloud migration. Cloud computing presents some difficult challenges to IT organizations regarding storage, business continuity, compliance and risk management which will be featured presentations.

Burton Group sees need in helping enterprises understand the business risks and rewards of cloud computing, including whether an enterprise chooses to build their own private cloud infrastructure or leverage an external party, because getting the underlying architecture right is critical.

Burton Group is offering a complimentary report, "Cloud Computing: Transforming IT," along with a webcast to introduce this new Burton Group coverage area.
